The cover wont clear the shifter mechanisms. You needed to get a 6spd so that u could of just bolted it on. The shifter boot gives you more room.

I have gone through 2 98 trans am consoles trying to get the auto to work, and it just wont. shifter asssembly is to high adn u need to cut the heck out of it to make it at least move. Dont do it, i have wasted alot of money on that and now i realized that i need to get a 6 speed shift plate for it to work

Just change the auto plate to a stick cover plate--and it slips right in--no mods at all.

Yes i believe it can be done also, but i think your must move the shifter either left or right a lil and it will fit,

If the guy wants to leave the auto plate for his wife, then don't try to pursaude him...

... It has been done, you just have to move the shifter, so i would assume you unbolt the shifter, play with it till you can install the Auto Plate on the console, then drill new holes, and bolt the shifter down...

Probabley harder than that...

Does anyone know if the shifter out of the 4th gen will work on the 700r4 in a thirdgen, if so it would solve some of the clearance issuses.

I had decided I am going to get a 6spd console for my car and I am going to make an led indicator and mount it in my cowl. Use one led bulb and one number led's and have it read out

I can't find an LED I can make a N or D with, well I guess I could make it lower case

Which one would make more sense?

Someone on here had done something similar with a series of LED's I just thought I would take one step further. You just have to make the shifter ground the connection in each position.

Just a quick ?. Do the power window switches just bolt right up to the existing 4th gen console not problems? Also, so any 93+ manual console would work??

No--you have to mod them in somehow. Most people just put them in the ashtray. I was thinking of putting mine on the sides of the center console somehow.
Any 93 up console will work fine. I think the 97 up version has 4 cup holders.

Even if you got a 4th gen auto shifter, it still wouldn't line up so that you can bolt up the shifter plate

Hiya

383strkr84z, did you ever find out how to do that auto-console swap? Did the guy move the shifter over?

I think I read something somewhere about the gear-indicators not lining up correctly....

It was my understanding that to make a 4th gen auto shift console work you need the shifter as well as the upper console. I have both and tried it, and here's what I found. The 3rd gen shifter sits on a mounting plate that suspends it above the tranny hump. IF you were to remove that plate (and NO I haven't done this, I'm too chicken) there appears to be enough room to mount the 4th gen shifter in the newly created depression. However, there are no mounting holes whatsoever. You would have to create them. This also does not take into account the length of the shifter cable and the lockout cable, the one that disables the ingition switch from going all the way to "off" without the tranny in park. For all intents and purposes it does appear that the electrical and cable connections to the 4th gen shifter are the same as the 3rd gens.

I too have seen the whole shooting match installed in a 3rd gen, but have never talked to the person directly that did the install to find out any more details.
