Cargo cover issues!!!!
Cargo cover issues!!!!
Ok, so I bought a cargo cover with mounts and screws for my 1991 Camaro RS. It did not originally come with this option. I would like to know if I need to have the mounting brackets for it. I pulled back the rear side panels, there's nothing there. Although I found the "witness marks" to help me drill through the sides to put the mounts in place. But how is this going to hold unless I have the metal behind it???? I only have the plastic mounts that hold the cargo cover. Just need the brackets for the back of them. Does anyone sell these? If not can I make something for support?
Anyway I can install this without looking "hacked" or "cheesy"?
I think I'm gonna call my GM Dealer Monday to see if they still even carry this stuff!
I also found out that I need the mount that goes to the rear deck lid trim panel too! The thing that will hold it down to the bottom. Damn! And thought it would just bolt right in! Shiiiitttt!

You will need the little brackets from the donor car welded onto your car. Tack weld them first, then assemble everything including the trim panels for a "Test Fit". It is very easy to install the little brackets incorrectly.

You don't need the metal
The tension will hold it in place. Have had mine that way for six mounths now no probs.

I was under the impression that he was talking about the cargo/security cover/shade. I did not realize he wanted to know about the "locking floor cover".

From the description he gave, it sound more like the rear cargo shade he is tryng to install. The outline for the holes on the side panels is on the back side. I cut the metal brackets that the plastic mount caps attach to out of a donor car. Then I pop-riveted them into my coupe. The metal reinforcing piece that is on the underside of the plastic hatch trim can be transferred to yours. I cut the T-slots with a hot utility knife. Lon

dude..just use a hole saw bit to drill out the holes(measure carefully) and pop the round insert pieces into the holes..the pressure keeps them in place and you can even put a bead of glue around them.(i didnt). Its not worth the pain fo welding the brackets.
Tonyrodz,
Yes, I'm talking about the cargo cover "shade" that you pull down to latch to the deck lid trim panel. No there is no tech article on this, I checked, twice. But yes, there is a tech article for the rear cargo cover "door". That I don't have.
If I decide to install this with just the black pieces drilled/glued to the side panels, then I guess I'm good to go. Now that I see more than one of you guys have done this and still hold ok without the brackets. By the way, EVERYTHING is discontinued for this!!!! I called up my GM dealer today about it! They have discontinued a lot of parts for this car! Which I understand, They are getting older!
So, now my only "issue" left is, where do I get the piece that goes to the deck lid so the shade can latch to something???
Can any help me on this?
Thanks for the info everyone!

I've got a nice one in black--think I have one in gray too. What color interior do you have?
Funny--I was at the j/y today and there was a bird there that had the cargo shade(was missing)-too bad I didn't remember or I could've grabbed those metal mounts for you.

Tonyrodz,
That's cool. I think I'm better off just installing the pieces to the sides. Sounds like a big headache to weld the metal brackets in!
Anyway, I have gray interior. If you have that mount or whatever they call it, that goes to the deck lid, I'd love to have it! That's the only thing I need to install the shade!
P.S. I dont' care if you can't find the one gray, though would be nice to have, but black/gray don't care. They are discontinued!
Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!
Very appreciated!!!!!

I bought the reinforcement bracket from the dealer that goes behind the holes(at the time, 2 years ago you could get it) and used that as a template for the holes. Check around.. it might still be available. If not you can probably make one out of sheet metal.
Tonyrodz,
No. I do not have the power hatch option. It is a motorized hatch, but I don't have the remote hatch button on the console if that's what you mean. Please let me know about the part once you get it. If possible, please send a pic so I know what it looks like before I get it from you.
Thanks.

TPITerror,
I called GM dealer, said they discontinued the brackets. Please let me know if you can send a pic or a drawing of some kind to me so I can get an idea of what thet look like. I can probably make them out of sheet metal, but need some kind of idea what they look like to make them.
thanks.

ok-here's a pic of the actual piece. See the square that's cut into it? That's factory and it's for the contacts for the pwr pull down--that's why I asked about the pwr hatch option.
see the little slots cut into the front of it? That's where the cargo cover latches into. It's reinforced w/a metal plate that's riveted in there.

OK, I have a power pull down motor for the hatch. Like I said, it's motorized. That looks like it will work for my car. However, I don't have the slot that's in the one in the picture. So, I guess that would make it the power hatch option one. How's the condition of the piece? Are there any scratches, or any kind of wear on it? Now I know what it looks like, then I definitely need the gray one! I thought it was a little bracket that you add to the deck trim panel. Oh well, if you have it, I'll take it. What would the shipping be?
