wtf? i thought grills were "fairly" interchangable?

so I just got a '91 Z28 grill for my '91 RS. From the zillion posts Ive read, it sounded like it should at least have a few bolt holes that match up? Ive got nothing here. Tried to install it during lunch. I thought I was doing so well, didn't lose any screws or break anything, fit the new grill in, and not even the top holes line up. BOO HISS. Did I get screwed? I got it from gm-parts-dealer.com since gm parts direct wanted $35 bucks to ship the damn thing. Oh well, I guess now I have more time to find some decent fog lights to go with it. Time to get out the drill and almost surely break somethin. Any advice??

Man, your car looks sweet as it is with the grill you've got now. Why did you want to change?

Another question? WHere did you get those lens covers from? Do you have to take them off for night-driving?

Oh...if you want a really cool different grille, have you ever thought about a billet grille?

or she

i want to change b/c the z grill is gloss black and with the bowtie in silver (soon to be modified) the car will be even more black.. i do want the fog lights, i think it will look a little nicer (at the very least different than it does now!) - of course they wont be all that functional b/c they will have to be tinted like the rest of the lights/reflectors..

the hl covers dont come off at night, but i try to avoid driving it at night if at all possible. it is a bitch to see with them on, but i think it is b/c my headlights are way to high (i recently installed the xenon conversion kit), and every time i remember that, im already on the road, and when i get home i forget (what can i say, textbook blonde.)

my hubbys friend has a black '92 vert all blacked out like mine (its great going out with both our black cars and parking next to each other hehe) with a billet grill. it looks ok, but kind of like the car is smiling at you.. dont know if i really like that.. i think the pics we had of his car got deleted but ill see if i can get another one so you see what i mean. plus it wouldnt be all that original anymore...

you did kind of get me thinking though, what if i painted the stock grill gloss black? that might be interesting (if the paint would stick worth a crud)

Actually it would look really good to paint it gloss black...it'd stick as long as you sanded it well enough so the paint would stick. I've got the grill and foglights on mine now that you are interested in. Maybe I'm just tired of that look. I ordered the billet grille a few days ago and I can't wait to put it on. But i nee to paint the front fascia before I do.

I know they have clear light covers. I saw them on a pic of an 82 camaro pace car (back in 82 I guess). I know they are around and it would make driving at night easier than the smoke ones. BUt the smoke ones look really cool. especially on cars our color (mines black too).

When I look at my front end, with the fog lights and grill, it just seems like there is something missing. Just my own impression I guess. Thats why I want to 'fill it in' so to speak.

About your hubbies car. He has a 92 convert? I have a 91 convert Z28. Would you tell me if he's had his top replaced, and if so, would you tell me where he got it.

I thought the grilles were interchangeble too by the way and am surprised they don't match. Could be a grille for a different year camaro.

Considering the actual nose itself (not the gfx part) was the same from 85-92 (IROC, Z28 and, RS), yes, at least a few holes should line up.

I second that. If you want to keep the rims you have now, you could have them powdercoated black. It would look pretty sweet.

I have a 91 RS and went from orig grill to Z28 grill with no problem. Onlt thing I had to do was drill some holes for scewes into the nose (left and right of license plate on the side) you will see the holes on hte Z28 grill. You will have to get screws for them beacuse the other grill doesn't have screws in that spot.

Matthew91Z - my hubbies friend has one, I will check with him, the top has not been replaced yet, but he will probably be doing it this winter b/c the plastic in the back is split. Have to keep the smoke covers - it just looks so mean this way! Don't have louvers, i want to get some blisters for the hood, but it sounds like they wont fit on the stock rs hood from what ive been reading. wont have money for a new hood for a while..

91ZMan - hehe i would have to be drunk to do that..

Benny - could have been me? although it would have been earlier than 5:30, more like 4:45-5 or so.. my license plate says Roxies so if you saw the back of the car and didnt notice, it wasnt me

brihoop - hmm never thought about it. i could test fit some old american racing wheels we have in the garage, just to get an idea of how a black wheel would look.. maybe something for this weekend. ill see if i can get a pic.

deadbird - i thought the top holes would fit, but they are both off by about an inch.. may have to return this and get one off an actual car.

mcC - just didnt want to leave you out since im responding to everyone else

jaws - yeah i was figuring on drilling those, should have some extra screws from the front of the stock grill though - im thinking i dont want three ugly holes in the front of that sweet grill..

whew i dont think i have ever posted something this long before.. thanks for letting me know im not crazy! (at least not completely :lala: )

When I put mine on all I did was used self tapping screws and lined it up and screwed them in... no problems, you can paint the RS grille abut it is so flimsy that even with flex additive it cracks and it chips bad, tried it on my '89 but decided to switch to the Z grille!

roxie

yeah..the plastic window in mine as a 3 inch tear in it. But, I've found a website where you can buy the StayFast top and then buy a window separately that zips in. All the ones that came convertable (I think) had the rear plastic sewn in. This is definately an advantage becasue if the window is ever torn, you can just zip another in instead of buying the entire freaking top. So just in case. Did I write all this before??

And your hood...those blister will bolt right on (I think) so as long as they are lined up ok, I don't see why you could not put them on. And you can get them cheaper at thirdgenresource.com

The grilles I've seen are simply screwed to the front bumper cover with self tapping screws, as mentioned above. Just get the screws(in black), line the grille up where you want it, and use a drille with a driver bit to start the screws, then tighten them with a screwdriver so you don't strip the holes out.....
