on my dad's old 87 i stole my black interior out of i regret to say i tore the headliner down and into about 7 giant chunks. it was sagging anyways. now my sagging doeskin headliner looks sweet!



definately wish i woulda changed headliner fabric back then...

Im redoing my door panels, sail panels and headliner all in black Vinyl.

So far its all done except the headliner.

The glue i am using is
"TAC-IT Neoprene contact upholstery Adhesive"
It is High heat resistant, pressure sensitive permanent

it bonds: Headliners, Vinyl Tops, carpet, insulation, foam rubber and more.
5$ a can and i havn't even gone through half of it yet.

And i picked up the vinyl for 9$ a yard at a distribution center. Bought 5 yards and ill have plenty left over to do a few other areas.

What color is that hardtop headliner you have? I need the beige one or the other one forgot what its called, plus, i have the roof center console thingy so i wanna put that on too..Hey, i kinda like it....My dad lives in piscataway Nj so a pick up shouldnt be too bad i guess, not sure where bloomfield is but im sure he does

Plus, i have an 86 T/A, i dont know if that makes a diff, im pretty sure they are interchangeable between camaros and birds

Yeah I just installed a new headliner in my t-topped camaro today (it was missing the old headliner.. board and all) and it was pretty straight forward, took me about an hour total.

What I would try is to try and shave the foam material from the back of the speaker area... If I remember right that is kind of what GM did in the first place... They somehow removed the foam from the holes... The Headliner fabric is pretty tough you may be able to use a small brush to get it off...

I DO know that some Citrus cleaners will disolve some foams... The one I am thinking of is Quick-N-Kleen... I know for a fact you do not use it on Carpets that have a foam backing... it will disolve it rather quickly... I could try it on some headliner foam and see what happens...

Ok, just for you I took a small piece of Headliner material I got from a friend who works at Johnson Controls... When he got me the material they made the neadliners for GM's Full size Trucks about 4 years ago... It is sitting with the Quick-N-Kleen, lets see what happens...

All I have to say is It did not work... This same stuff disolves some foams as well as Gasoline, but I guess not in this case... I could try a different brand of Headliner material if your interested.

Actually on the sail panels using headliner material, you can leave the foam...it does not interfer with the sound at all since by nature the fabric allows air through it. In fact I had the headliner replaced the first time by a upolstry shop and watched so I could learn. They never removed any foam. So I did not either when I did the black swap myself.

No I was asking about the guy who was covering his headliner and sial panels in vinyl. Since vinyl does not breath I wondered what he was going to do to keep from blocking the speaker output. It would not effect bass, but it sure will effect the mid and highs....

I would just leave the material alone regardless of what it is on the sailpanels. You don't really want highs coming in from behind you.

I had started another thread with pics that show a t-top headliner recovery, start to finish. Unfortunately, that's been on hold for quite a long time as I finally just started tearing out weatherstripping and cleaning everything up to replace. When I get the weatherstripping done, I'll be finishing the headliner and sail panel recovery with pics.

Meanwhile, refer to the link in my signature below... it will link you to a number of helpful articles.

Dont forget to wear gloves AND long sleeves. I wore short sleeves and now I got that prickly fiberglass in the arms feeling. Fortunately I did remember to wear eye protection.

I have gotten some at JoAnn Fabrics (Regional or national Chain), I like to take it and pull and stretch it to try and get the stretchiest stuff availalbe.

Not that i know of...I ahve seen rolls of it at Pep Boys and AutoZone. Limited colors and high prices though. You could try Year one! Bound to ahve it, but the price I coul not tell you.

I guess what people are trying to let you know is that the best places to get the best selection, resonable prices, and decent sizes (you say how much) is the local fabric stores. Look in the phone book, or ask your Mom, if she is local, if she knows of one around town. Go there and ask them, if they don't have it maybe they can get it or tell you of a better fabric supplier!

Im doing my t-top headliner now..I fiberglassed the weak areas and picked up 3 yards of black headliner material from a local upholstery shop for $20.00 Im doing the t-top, sail panels and the visors...

the cardboard on the visors fell apart when i took off the old material, so i made a template using poster board and then fiberglassed them, they are stronger than new ones! I havent covered them yet but they will be fine...

the sail panels had the foam backing you guys are talking about, i did not put that back, i used a patch of fiberglass screen ( left over from a screen door repair) and glued it over the speaker holes, then put the headliner material over them, they came out great and I can hear my speakers even better than before...
