locking seats?

On my 90' trans am, both driver and passenger seat backs lean forward (like when someone is getting in back) without pushing anything. However, there is a small black lever near the back - base of the seat, and I have no idea what it does. Are the seats supposed to lock in position, or do they all lean like this? If they are supposed to lock, why arent they locking for me?

My seats have the exact same problem that yours have.

I have just assumed that the lock mechanism broke before the car came into my possession. I will also assume that when it broke it just let the seat push forward with out any locking.

I guess this is good since it would be no fun if it broke and did not lean forward.

According to the info I have received - the seats are not supposed to lock back on our cars like they do on most cars. The seats should only lock if you brake very hard or crash into something. This seems goofy to me but I've heard this from several difference sources.

Try taking the cover off at the outside hinge of the seat. You should then be able to see what's actually happening.

According to the 87 Service manual your seats will not lock unless your going down a steeper than (Something like) 30° grade, (Thats REALLY STEEP) it looks like going straight down hill). There does happen to be an adjustment according to the service manual...

Hope that helps.

my driver side seat locks until you push the button but the passenger seat doesnt lock. I wonder if thats right? I like the seat to lock so when you hit the brakes you dont have to hold the seat back.

The seat is not supposed to lock in place under normal conditions. It only locks during hard braking or an impact, just like the seatbelt, or when going down a steep grade. The black handle at the bottom of the seat back is to release the lock if it jams in an accident
