stupid stupid question

I know this is gonna sound strange, but since I bought my car 2-3 months ago, I have always had a rattle from the spare tire compartment. This weekend I attempted to "fix" that and only made it worse.

Can someone with a dig cam take a few pics of how all this goes together W/O rattles. Rattles drive me up the wall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of rattles, any tips on how to make the hatch shut up, or something I can buy. A coworker said he use to have a mustang and they made X braces for them like the corvettes have and it made his shut up. Camaros have anything like that??

Thanks for any postings :hail:

don't have pictures, but try taking the round extension for the lug/jack wrench out, it should be held on by a clip on the wrench. which is mounted under the spare tire.

and welcome to owning a thirdgen you will be chasing rattles for quite some time

Well, it was all laying loose, and been used, and the spare was flat, GREAT. Only rattles I have really noticed was the spare, hatch, and one trim piece. But then the MRS drives it more then me.

So, I didn't notice a clip or anything, just trying to fit it in places. It was quite a .

thanks for the post. Any other ideas, thoughts, pics?

For a temporary fix to the hatch-rattle-thing, I put two folded towels sitting on the back of the car, and the hatch closes on top of it. (It doesn't stick out the back or anything, it's invisible unless the hatch is open.) It helped my rattling a lot by acting as a cushion.

If you dont want rattles you bought the wrong car I would just try and tighten up anything you can.

The orginal owner of my car was nice enough (idiot) to get rid of my spair tire, jack, and wrench. So I just bought a spair tire and have it held in with felt on the back side with a bunge. I have a 4 way upagainst the tire. The jack is in the box on the other side. I have no rattles from it.

Just turn up your stereo loud enough so that you dont hear any of the rattles. Works for me

What sucks is when the stereo vibrates everything so much that you get new rattles... I remember putting a bass test CD on and finding every rattle. Found/fixed most of them, tried to go for a drive, and oops- battery dead.

Tom, I did that on my show truck. Only rattles I couldn't get rid of on it was the doors.

My hatch motor went bad, so maybe that was part of it not closing good enough.

Nobody has pics of how their spare is installed??

no pix but the set up in both camaros ive had requires you to have the original jack and donut and there should be bolt with a c hook end two wingnuts and a spacer/plug plate. this is from memory so dont take it as gospel.

the jack mounts against the fenderwell sort of at an angle parallel to the floor, there is a bolt or nut at the top and then the hook piece hooks to an eye in there somewhere, feeds through the hole in the plug plate, which fits in the hub of the wheel and then the wing nut tightens it all down, the stock tire iron is supposed to fit in there somewhere too.

i know it isnt real clear...but what is most likely is you are missin some of the hardware

If your hatch is rattling, you have to take of the rearmost plastic panel(the one that covers the motor), loosen the bolts that hold on the motor latch(what the hatch hook goes in to) and move the latch assembly down(towards the ground). Retighten the bolts. (after you close the hatch and see how it closes you may have to make some more adjustments to get it right, i.e. move the latch back up a little, down more, etc.) The hatch will close tighter, seal better, and mainly, it won't rattle.

Ok, thanks for the tips. My hatch motor broke, so I'm wondering if that wasn't part of my rattle, it not clamping down enough.

For the jack, next time I go to junk yard, I'm gonna check every 3rdgen and pull the brackets for the spear. I only have two "studs" and one "washer" (center) for the tire. I am unsure of where the lug and crank go, thinking of just getting a cheap towel and wrap them up in it. Give me or the mrs somethign to wipe our dirty hands on if that occasion ever comes up. And keeps them from bangin eachother.
