Thats an interesting debate, Actually I have seem many people remove the insulation with no problems that I am aware of.

What it does is a couple of things, most importantly it protects your hood from the heat of the engine so not to wreck your paint. Another thing is it absorbs some of the engine sound when the car is running.

New hood insulation usually runs about 35-40 bucks or so from GM.

Its your call, I will NOT say do it tho...

i don't think it would be a problem to remove it.. i don't have mine and my hood paint is fine, you can hear the under hood noises a little better tho...

Think of it this way....

How hot does the hood get sitting in the baking sun all day???

It seems it would be cooler under the hood......

Just my .02, but it would be safer to probally keep it on or buy a new one....

Unless you keep the engine below 160* all the time...

My friend has an 88 IROC with no insulation and he's had no problems with the hood paint yet, even when the fans weren't working.

Be careful if you have a fiberglass hood.. I have no insulation in my engine bay, and the paint has started to bubble on the hood. (it is the 82-84 Fiberglass hood)

Mine fell off years back, and my once-black-hood turned to an oxidized gray blotchy hood from the heat and the bad GM paint...I don't know if better paint jobs hold up to the heat better, but I just put a new insulation pad on mine. 25 bucks through GM, plus some dollars in new clips is worth the trouble.

Is there any alternative to the black insulator for aftermarket hoods(fiberglass)???

Some sort of spray you can put on their that acts like the insulator???

If ya got a 305 or a 350 just get rid of that crap it just gets in the way plus everybody can hear your engine grrrrr louder and better

Mines been off for about three years now and I have no problems. If you have the K&N cone filter you can hear it sucking in air alot more.

One other thing to remember is that it acts like a fire blanket if the motor catches on fire. The plastic pins will melt and the insulator drops in hope that it can smother the fire out.
