Parting out your car?
Parting out your car?
I couldn't find a better place to put this one, and it's not technically an ad, so I hope it's a moderator approved question, but how much money should you expect to make when parting out a vehicle?

Well, I part out cars all the time. Coming up with a figure is going to be fairly tough. It really depends on what's good on the car. Some cars I've parted out and haven't even made enough to make it worthwhile and other cars I've made a lot on. Without more infomation on the car you really can't say.

It really depends on what's good on the car and what kind of options it has. As far as engines go, V6's are worthless. Even the V8's aren't worth much of anything unless they're a TPI. You can usually get $200 to $300 out of a trans. A non-posi rearend is worthless but you can get decent money out of a posi rear. Also, you need to have some connections to get rid of the stuff. It will probably take you a while to even break even because it will take a while to sell certain parts. What kind of car were you planning to part out?

I was just weighing a last option situation on my '92 RS (3.1 MPFI). Except for my recently added performance exhaust (I'm not sure if I can even claim it as new. Even though I've hardly driven it, the car's been sitting for monthes.) it's basically stock. Recent unfinished body work has really devalued the car, and it's too cold here to paint. A personal situation may be forcing me to move on short notice, and I don't know if I'll have a garage or simply room for an extra car, within the year and I'm going to need to get rid of the car a lot quicker than I first planned (I'm selling it because of money issues). I'd rather get her painted and get a lot more out of it.
From what you've told me so far, I think parting it out isn't really a good idea. If I can at least get her in primer, I could probably get a lot more for it as a whole car. It runs great, the body panels are in good shape except for the hood being in a hail storm (previous owner), and the interior's nearly fully restored, with the exception of the carpet needing replaced, and the seats needing some work. But for $200 I may just replace the carpet and buy seat covers. It might up the value of the car a bit more, or at least help find a potential buyer.

I have a buddy that is what he does to pay for his hobby... he buys cars and parts them out, and sells the parts on e-bay... he buys a car for $500 and gets around $1000 for the parts, scraps it out, and then goes on to another one...
He does 66/67 olds Toronados, but he likes it, and he knows those cars inside out...
As for these cars, there so plentiful in junk yards, that unless it has some unusual option, or is in pretty good shape its hard to tell...
I have paid for the following: some are guesses:
Dash pad nice cond: $50
Rims poor to ok cond $50-$100
Rims Good cond: $150-$200
Bumper facia's $50 each
Posi rear end with disks: 100-200
Auto transmission: $200
Instrument panel: $50-75
I have bought rims that were near mint for $50 for the set for my 87 Formula, and there currently on there, and I have bought rims that were pretty rough for 75 & 100 for the set, so it depends on what you have, and how people feel that day.
you can get an idea from what people are asking by going to e-bay or the classifieds, but it will take you a while to get your money out of it, because hot everyone needs that particular part at that moment...
Also keep in mind you will have time involved removing some of the parts... so its not an effortless job.

I would suggest to try and sell it whole first. The worst part about is you need a place to do it and someone to take whats left. You also will have to probably ship most of it.That can be a pain if you cant sell the large/heavy parts local.Parting is a LAST resort for a good running car.
