my headliner is busted.... help
i drive an 84 Z28 with t-tops and the headliner is being really gay. The cloth is sagging and i cant figure out how i could get it to stick back to the headliner. Would a glue stick work?

Do this
Mine was really bad too. Im not sayin you shouldnt try to fix it. Mine was just so bad, and I used so much 3M adhesive to make it stay, I got fed up and ripped it out. Plus my headliner backing was rotted to hell. Looks must better bare metal. Then again, I have T-tops...if you have a hard top, it wouldnt look too good. Im savin for a new one. They are darn expensive tho!

Wait I just saw you have t-tops.. This way looks much better when the tops are out. No one notices its gone.

I notice (and everybody else as well) and think it looks like crap... that's why I finally took the one out of my '86 and put it into my '89 (after re-covering it).
I was going to get the fiberglass T-top liner from the Classic Industries for $18x-something, but then saw an ABS plastic one for $150 on-line.
If your particle board is shot, then no amount of glue will make the headliner material stick.

djunod...i didnt mean NO ONE would notice. I know everyone here notices, cuz I have a pic of it. I would LOVE to put a new headliner in. My old backing was so crappy. It basically fell apart when taking it out. But now that its gone, from outside the car, you cant even tell. Haha...actually, I never took my headliner down all the way. Most of it blew off on the highway one day with the tops out. Oh well. Where is the best place to get replacment t-top headliners these days? I havent really found any good deals on them.

Check the Yellow Pages of your Phone book for Auto Reupholstery shops. You can get the headliner installed so it looks like the factory one. It will also be cheaper in time and money then sending away for a replacement. Had mine done that way and it looks really great. My opinion.
The headliner in my 91 was sagging so I ripped it all out. But I did it for two reasons. #1 I wanted to check for rust. #2 I want to convert the interior to black so I need a new one anyway. I plan to get a black one from www.1aautomotive.com for $150. Here is how they describe it:
THE SHELL IS MADE OF MOLDED ABS PLASTIC WHICH UNLIKE THE ORIGINAL PRESSBOARD SHELL WILL NOT ABSORB MOISTURE AND PROVIDES BETTER ADHESION. THESE HEADLINERS ALSO USE A NYLON PADDING WHICH WILL NOT DETERIORATE LIKE THE ORIGINAL PADDING. YOU GET THE SAME GREAT LOOK AS ORIGINAL WITH MUCH BETTER MATERIALS.
And it costs something like $120 to ship to Hawaii (something crazy like that) but its ok because I will be ordering two sets of black headliners (one hardtop, one t-top) and two sets of black carpet at one time. The only thing I have to check on is to see if they weigh more than the stock pieces (since it says THESE HEADLINERS SHIP UPS 70LB RATE). I doubt they really weigh 70 pounds each.
If you want to keep your color and the pressboard is in good shape then just have a local reupholstery shop do it. Shouldnt be more than $50 and no hassle for you.

Most fabric stores sell headliner material, and it is much less expensive at a fabric store ($4 - 6 yard) then at an automotive upholstery supply shop ($20 - $25 yard), at least here in Augusta GA.

thanks for the tiips guys! maybe ill just take it to a place in the city to get it done when i get my seats done. By the way, how much do you figure it would cost to get seats cleaned, and small burns fixed?? a general price would help. Or does anyone know of a really good upolstry (sp?) cleaner out there that i could use?
I found a local upholstery shop that replaced my headliner, and recovered the rear speaker panels for $ 120. It looks BETTER than factory, too. He will steam the seats and carpet and detail the interior for $75. don't know what other shops are like, but in my area I would highly recommend him.

my suggestion is similar to djunod's. I redid my headliner on a non f-body so i didn't have the t-tops to deal with. I was going to try to reattach the original headliner but it was jsut falling apart. so i took the entire thing out of the car and removed everything from the board. I made sure that every bit was off of it so i had a good surface to work on. I went to a fabric store and got some headliner material for pretty cheap. I used the 3M trim adhesive and did the whole thing... it fell down 2 days later. So i did the whole thing over again with another 3M adhesive that was heavy dudy and that worked well. It actually started seperating again about a year later but the car was crap and i sold it. If you're looking for something to really last, getting a new backing board would be reccomended. Mine looked great for the year it lasted though and cost maybe a total of $20

what is the headliner made out of?? looks like cardboard or something... a cheap way to fix it would be to just buy new cloth and then cut out the same shape as the headliner and put it in.. ?
84Z28_5.7ltr_V8: check out my post on repairing headliners: Repaired my headliner... a few lessons. It should help.
