1980-1981 Z28 Fender Vents.....anyone installed any on a 3rd gen??

I think the 1980-1981 Z28 fender vents would look bad *** on a 3rd gen. So....has anyone done it? I know there is a company that makes the whole fender....that has Trans Am vents installed already.....but that's WAY to much for a fender....$280.00.!! Any suggestions....information would be greatly appreciated..!! I would like to install them on my 91 Z28.....but...I would like to see if some other guys have done it.....

Unlimited products makes fiberglass fenders with a similar vent in them.

I dunno. Personally I don't like them. To me they just don't fit the theme of the car.

I agree that the TRANS AM fender vents don't really fit the theme of the car too.....but the 80-81 Z28 fender vents do......they are much sleeker and don't stick out like the TRANS AM Fender vents do.....plus....it's a custom look....and I think the 80-81 Z28 style vents would look sweet with my SS hood.....I just wish I could see some examples on some third gens before I start cutting on my fenders.....

OMG....very very nice! How are you going to install them? They are metal vents....so...are you going to weld them in?? I would really hate to cut a hole in a perfect fender....but those "vents" look really really awesome.....

Some info for ya....

Front fender exhaust vents have been a part of the automobile for almost as long as there have been fenders on cars. If you care to journey back to the pre integrated fender era, the hood of many cars of the period had vents on the sides of the cars to get rid of excess engine heat. The front fender air extractors on the T/A do remove heat from the engine compartment, but that is just one of their responsibilities.
Pure sports and racing cars of the 50's and 60's used fender vents to reduce the air pressure beneath the hood, thereby reducing lift. By giving the air that enters the engine compartment a controlled way out, the air doesn't have to force it's way out the bottom of the car, which lessens the high pressure air beneath the car. In many of todays race cars, this air is now redirected out of the hood thru the use of louvres, which is ok on a race car, but this practice (althougth there are cars that employ vents of this nature) is less practical on a street driven car where water can enter the engine compartment.

The front fender air extractor, is the vent is located in a depressed area of the housing, in kind of a backward scoop. This design takes advantage of the "Venturi" effect, using air flowing accross the air extractor to create a low pressure area, thereby drawing air out of the extractor. This results in something for nothing. High pressure air is given a pathway out of the engine compartment and at speed, a low drag port is molded into the side of the car which naturally aids in air removal.

Anyway you need to cut a hole in the fender and do some body work and create something so it can sit as flush as possible....

I don't have the vents in my posession, so the body guy couldn't give me specific details, but he said he would need to cut a hole in it in order to get it to sit a little more flush....

So...are you going to make the vents "seamless". On the 1980-1981 Z28s....they weren't seamless vents. I think they would look good seamless.....but....body work would be pretty hard to do....especially on my black Z28. You could cut a portion of the fender out....and sink it in....they just wouldn'e be seamless....you kind of know what I mean? I installed a set of late Trans Am fender vents in my old 84 Z28.....and I made them seamless. But the vents weren't metal and I couldn't weld them in....so I had to fiberglass them in....and they eventually had little hairline cracks....

I think it would kinda loose the "sleek" appearance of having them stick out.....so i'm gonna try my best to make them seamless, or at least close to it......

I like the Camaro vents, but the actual "vent" seems a bit small, maybe if all goes south i will try those, cause they seem easier to create a "seamless" appearance.....
