Decal Removal

Hey guys, I wanted to remove my IROC decal from the bottom of my doors because it's cracked and faded. What would you recommend as the best stripper and where could I get it (no pun intended)?

used a rasor blade and a hair drier the first time, get the decal warm and carefully slide rasor blade under decal and lift, don't scratch it off.

I don't know how i am going to take them off of mine this next time, i put them under the clear-coat about 8 years ago when I had the car painted and they look like they did the day I put them on. The clear-coat sealed the edges and kept them from peeling. The downside is there doesn't look like there is an easy way to remove them.

Yea use the razor blade and hair dryer to remove. DO NOT use a stripper you could really screw up your paint!

Please don't use a Razor!!!! Yes take a hair dryer to it to heat up the adhesive, use you finger nails to take off the remaining decal, and some Isoprpyl rubbing alcohol to remove the left overs. If your not carefull with a Razor you will tare the paint right off the car. I have remove thousands of decals ...trust me.

I will agree with tearing paint off with a razor, I was getting the car repainted and it was going to go down to bare metal so I had more room for error. I didn't think of Felo72 replacing the decals without painting.

i will also agree with not using stripper

You could always use a decal "eraser"....really ment to use on pin stripes.....but you could use it for the IROC decals too....it just fits on the end of a drill....and it takes them off with no problems at all......can get them at auto paint shops

the eraser wheel works very well on the stripes. Go over the area with some 3M adhesive remover (pick it up at the paint store while you are there) and you will be done

Jim...

Why would you be worried about taking the decals off if they still look good?
Was wondering since I was thinking of having my decals put on under the clear.
Would you do it again? Any down side to doing it that way? THANKS!!

I have rust holes in my quarter panel that I intend to fix and alot of oxidation on the hood, roof, and trunk-lid. I want to take my car back to the factory appearance and I want the gold stripes and letters back instead of the red ones. I will definately put the decals and stripes under the clearcoat again, they have withstood the test of time and then some. The only downside I can see is that the decals are under the clear-coat and will be a mother to remove

Decal removal

I actually just re-glued my decals back on. Some of mine were so loose that I could just pull them off. I have used a hairdrier to take decals off a friends jetta and stuff but I did not use one on my car. I just pried it off. It looks like crap anyway I wasnt going to keep it. Now the most important part is to clean off the old stuff so you get a good sick.

I have heard that you should use Isoprply alcohol to clean the old stuff off but I didn't have any so I used turpentine. Again since I did not care what the paint looked like under the decal (I have the recessed area in the ground effects where the decal goes) I was not worried what it might do to the paint although came out fine anyways. It cleaned all the nasty crap and gave me a perfect surface on which to stick my new decal.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I've tried the 3M product and didn't have any luck, it worked great on the side molding adheasive though. I've also bought a product called "Sticker Shock" and it didn't even put a dent in it. I've use a razor blade for some of it, but it's so tedious. I was told to use paint prep solution from 3M from a well known body man, and that didn't work either.

Most of the decal has come off from the years, it's the glue underneith that's being stubborn. Every dust particle sticks to it.

I haven't tried the alcohol trick yet, but that and the eraser will be the first tricks I try when it warms up a couple degrees.

Heres just a thought and i dont know if it applies.but your paint under your sticker maybe alittle different coler than the rest of your car due to fading from the sun and other stuff....

GM actually sells a Decal removal spray... I would think it would not hurt your paint...

Many Dealers carry it...

I'll have to check that out, but how much is it going to cost? Will it be dealer prices and will you have to buy one can per side?
We all know how the dealer likes to gouge ya.

As for the paint underneith, I'm sure it'll be a different color, but I'd like to get it painted some day anyway. I meant to have it painted earlier in the year, but I had to unexpectedly rebuild an engine. A friend of mine offered to help prep the body and I can get a Maco paint job. He did the same thing to his daughters car and it came out looking like a high dollar paint job. It all has to do with prep work and I know the body guys would agree with that.
