Paint is getting cancer...HELP!
I need help here. On my roof, a small section of clear coat has flaked off. It is now spreading and the small section is gettin larger. It looks like crap. I need help. Does anyone know how i can make it look right again. i know how to stop it, I can wet sand it and spray some clear coat on it but it still looks sh*tty. How can I make it look like the rest of my car without repainting the whole roof?
Your problem is an all to common one with late '80's and early '90's chevys. During those years GM was experimenting with a new painting system at their Van Nuys plant in California, they had to meet new polution control regulations or some B.S. like that. The system didn't turn out to be so perfect and later on the paint would have a problem sticking to the primer (as far as I understand). When I bought my car, my whole hood was peeling and flaking, took a pressure washer to it and just watched the flakes fly. Same thing with my friends former '89 cavalier. I replaced my hood with a fiberglass one, but as far as the peeling, since it is a problem between the paint and the primer, I don't think it can be taken care of in any other way, other than stripping down and repainting. On the other hand you could get lucky by wet sanding like you did, but the whole roof (lightly), repainting the spot where the paint had flaked off, and then trying to blend the new paint with the old paint. I'm no expert, so I would try getting some opinions from body shops, or wait untill someone else replies to the post. I'll try to ask my friend and his dad, who own a body shop and see what he says. I know that GM did offer to repaint cars with the problem, but only for a couple of years afterward.

Its not my paint that is coming off, it is the clear coat. My car was repainted at like 19000 miles because the it had that primer problem but now just the clear is coming off and when that comes off the blue fades. when I stop it and re-clear the spot to stop it from spreading it still looks crappy. I might just have to repaint it.
