T-Top storage

Ive been kicking around the idea of making a rack where my backseat used to be that would lock the tops in when they arent on the roof. I could attach part of it to the cage.

i was just wondering if anyone has tried anything like this before, and if so how it worked out

ya id love to see pics of that.

i wonder if you could order the interior piece with the rack from a fourth gen and retro fit it into the car.

cause t-top bags and what not were a crappy anyways, and id like an easier, quicker, more secure way to store them

the t top holders in the fourth gens go in the deep part of the hatch...theyre basically plastic slots that the t tops wedge into.

i wonder if they still make something like that . . .

I'd like a rack myself....either bolted in the back seat area or in the trunk either would work....im worried about how sturdy it would have to be without risking t-tops getting cracked though...heh...maybe i'll try making a rack with built in shocks

all it has to do is hold them....they really dont break very easily....i used to just toss mine in the backseat.....never really had a probklem except the rattling around....im more worried about scrathing them up than breaking them

The best place would be in the hatch well. All you need is some carpet, 4 feet of 2x4 wood, 4 pieces of plywood, and matching carpet. Adhear or nail the carpet to the plywood on one side. Then build a frame that is just big enough to allow for the single ttop to fit into make sure to count in the thickness of the two pieces of plywood. Then make everything fit in the well and maybe get some more wood to fill in the top areas to make the whole thing look like the locking floor compartment. I know unforgiving89 AKA pennylessz28 did this with using pvc pipes and styerophone but I dont think he will be coming back to the boards anymore.

This is a crude drawing but it shows kinda what needs to be done. The yellow is the t'top.

I've had both a third gen and fourth gen. The third gen bag system is nicer IMHO.

Yeah the bag system does seam better, takes up less room and it can be put away when the tops are on.

I dont see how the rack in the rear well can be soo bad? Who uses that space for anything big? All's thats down there are my small tool kit and a quart of oil, brake fluid, powersteering, and antifreeze. If you made a custom rack, or like my idea of having two swing up panels or you could have the tops to one side and have a swing up cover like the locking storage compartment but only smaller on one side of the rear well. Hey what are the diemensions of a T'top?

How big of speakers? You could always make a box with two 12's right behind the rear seats ontop of the gas tank part, and put the amp in the well. I did some measuring and thers 40inches by 16 inches to mount a rack in the well and I eyeballed what a t'top is in length and got 28inches so you could build a rack and have a 10inch panel to swing up for space to put stuff in the well.

I mean putting them ontop of the fuel tank part of the rear compartment, right under the rear hatch shade. Very unnoticeable under a hatch shade. I like your 12's btw

Only problem, I dont have a hatch shade, otherwise That would be great (sad face). I've thought about getting one, but I whould have to redo the trim pice on the under side of the hatch. If you now an easy way to get a shad on a car that wasn't orig equimpet with one let me know.

Other members have put the shade in without the brackets underneath the trim panels. All you need are the plastic pieces that the shade attaches itself to the panels with. What the shade basically does is wedge itself inbetween the two panels, it isnt bolted on at all. I put one in my car but I did put the brackets on, but that was just because I was changing my int from red to black.

do you have any pics of how this would work without doing the hatch panel exchange. Would I have to cut my extisting panal. My cousin has the shade and the clip of it on the rear of the car goes into a notch into the hatch panel. And the bracket is welded to the hatch.

So my two obsticals is the front atatchments, (will I have any probles with that), and the rear. Any help would be great.

Tommorow I will take some pics of the panels. As for the attaching part in the deck lid trim piece, I just put the attaching part of the shade to it and marked where the two prongs are at. Then I cut a hole with a slot with a knife. It basically looked like this <>-- <>-- That way you can put the shade in and slide it over to keep it locked into place.

Heres the hole you need to make and the notch. You can see the bracket that I welded in only lines up with the top hole for the trimpiece I still havent drilled the bottom, cause it does fine with the 1 screw.

The shade its self will spring out about 1 inch more than when its in place. So it should be able to keep its self wedged in place with no problem.

Heres my decklid panel part. You can see I just half assed it until I find a black panel with the real holes in it to replace this broken grey one.

why would a shade matter the box is coverd by the deck lid and if you tint your windows it's not seen very well they just cant break your window and steal the box they have to pop the lock junkyard style and if they do that a cover wont get in their way. i say ancor the box down.

The shade isnt ment to hold the box in place, it ment to cover them so if you want by you wont see them. And my windoes are 35% tint, so You would see the shade not the sub box. And ancoring the subs might stop them from taking the box out of the car, But they anrt going to find out its ancored untill they brake in. I'd rather cover them so you dont even see that they are they. I'm more worried about them braking in and busting up my car, than stealling some speakers.

i know that the shade is for covering the subs and no where did i say it was for mounting. most of the time a criminal will HEAR your subs and find where your car is parked then brake in. only the super retards do the obvious look through glass meathod. besides the cover affects your sound.

The reason why the subs wouldnt be mounted in the hatch well is because you'd have the amp and if you have t's and made a rack that goes in hatch well there wouldn't be enough room for 2 12" subs, thats the main reason why anyone would want to put there subs there. Besides the shade helps with sun related wear. The carpet wont fade, part of the rear panels are covered by it too.
