I want to say you have to go under the dash and get to the switch itself. Once there, there is a clip or a button that you push and it will release the **** and the rod.

There is a small clip that holds the **** on. You will need a small flathead screw driver. Push the tab on the clip towards the rear of the car and pull on the ****, you will need to turn on your lights to get it off also.

On my car (91 camaro) there is a small pin wrapped in a spring that you push up with a screw driver, while holding the pin up, pull the **** out.
