Dry or not dry? That is the question!

Not wanting to burst any bubbles here, but,.....all you guys who say you don't get a drop of water in. How do you know?
Apart from my puddles that resembled lakes, there were the front footwells that looked perfectly dry, but when the carpet came up they certainly weren't!! Spare tire well looked dry. Tire out-soaking!

Hehe!

More problems discovered

This is the continuing sage of the thirdgen leakfinder.

If you are not completely bored by this by now, I was still getting a small amount of water in the spare wheel well and the opposite well on the other side of the car. It appeared to be coming in from near the bottom since no water tracks had been left in the talc! So, bumper cover off and a close look at the seams.
There were gaping cracks in the seam sealer right at the base of both rear quarters. If I put a light in the interior I could see it from the outside.
So, out with the black seam sealer again and a wipe over with a white spirited finger and the job was done.
Every confidence this time.
This should be the end of the leaks into the cabin, but, where else on the car is water getting where it shouldn't? Looks like a future summer's day job.

Andy.

For weather stripping conditioning...I recommend Black Magic. I was just in AutoZone on Friday and saw that they still make their thick silicone formula. This is what I use on all weather stripping and exterior rubber. It has kept my t-top weather stripping and rear hatch very plyable and like brand new! Yep its all original!
I used their tire gel on my tires and they look great w/o slinging crap all over!

If you notice water coming in a body seam, they sell body calking at AutoZone. I had to hit my car in a few spots after we ripped up the old carpet and some of it went with the old padding!

Another possibility for water leaking in the rear is poor sealing between the hatch glass and the steel decklid. The urethane dries out some over time, and shrinks. I don't know if this could be your problem, Andy, but its a possiblity. If it leaks there, butyl tape and urethane will seal it up. Its a messy job, and really takes 2 or 3 people to do easily (to support the hatch).

Thanks redraif and LT1guy.
You will be pleased to know that all leaks have now been solved! The vaseline did the trick on the seal to hatch contact, and plenty of black seam sealer did the rest.

Now it's in with the amps etc. No danger of them being submerged now!

Andy.

PS Good luck to all who are chasing their own water leaks.

This appears to be a major problem with this car. That light brown seam sealer put on at the factory seems to be drying out and cracking in quite a few areas. The well on the other side to the spare tire one also has a little bit of water in it, and it appears to be coming from a big clump of that sealant stuff near the bottom. Just below the last fastener holding the bumper cover to the quarter panel. Check that one out tomorrow. Might mean bumper cover and little skirt bits off.
Andy, my car had EXACTLY the same problem! I kept getting water in the spare tire well after it rained. While using the shop vac to dry it out one day I noticed that there was a trail of mildew that ran down into the well. I followed it and made the decision to pull the tail light. The seam sealer in that corner had several cracks in it. When I cut out the seam sealer it was disgusting all the stuff that came out with it! I decided to look at the driver's side too and sure enough it was wet. After cutting the seam sealer out of the corner on both sides and cleaning it thoroughly I squeezed some 40yr. adhesive caulk into the body (I couldn't find any 3M seam sealer around here which is what I would have preferred to use). So far I've got no more leaks, but I think everybody here should check that spot on their cars.

Later,
Harry

I didn't read all 61 replies, so this may be a repeat, but I'm writing it just incase.

I had water building up in the floor of my hatch area in my GTA and it drove me nuts. I siliconed everything in sight on the hatch, and changed the gasket twice. Finally I took the hatch apart to find that there was no gasket between the metal panel and the glass. I put a gasket in there and the car has been dry since.

It took me forever to find that leak because where the water seemed to be dripping didn't make sense. Once it was getting into the hatch, it was going to the sides before it dripped down into the car. Drove me nuts.

My 86 Ragtop leaked in heavy rain with the old worn top, after replacing it a couple of years ago, it doesn't leak a drop!

Here are my floor boards with no rust whatsoever:

My hatch seal was leaking a little in the same spot towards the top and when I replaced the hatch seal I noticed the metal ridge the seal sits on was bent down in the leaky spot. Didn't notice it until the seal was off but bent it back with a hammer and its dry now.

When I got my car last year I took it through the car wash a couple of times-BIG mistake! Had the amp and CD changer in the trunk-both were submerged in about 3" of water. Found out that the water was running down the hatch glass and under that black piece at the bottom of the hatch into the trunck. Where these 2pcs met there it wasn't sealed and was before the hatch seal. Had to replace my stereo
I still have a leak somewhere around the hatch cuz it runs down onto the back seats-gonna have to re-read some of these posts and use some of your guys's suggestions.
