Painter is teasing me, SOB :)

He called me Sat. night at and told me they just got her all primed, and that they were gonna jamb it today. Swung by and took a few pics. Then I asked when they were gonna shot it.
Next frickin weekend. Drivin me crazy cause I have tons of stuff to get done yet, plus just anxious to see it 1 color and no flaking clear coat. Dash/door panels from 99 Bird are on the truck, still lokkin for a console, overnighted all new weather stripping tonight, then gotta get everything back together and tear back into the motor/trans. Man I'm gettin antsy.

I lied, stopped by this afternoon and snuck in 1 more before pic, they got the car all block sanded and the bumpers, misc.. ready to go, all they have left is to wash the car, the shop, and squirt. Been so frickin cold lately, w/ windchills today it's -30, oh boy! He did'nt want to drag his hose from the house to the shop till everything was ready to wash.

Got the windsheild out yesterday as well, I'm gonna leave it out until I have the new dash mounted. It'll help immensly with trimming the new dash pad to fit the contours of the windsheild. Here's the dash with the 3 of 8 gauges mounted.

Just a though.. When I painted my car, which was a 89 RS, I replaced the windshield trim with the 92 trim. It is wider and looks alot better.

Didnt know what year model yours was, but my 89 had the small trim. Im sure glad I got the wider one.

Mines an 86, an to honest w/ ya I guess I did'nt know there was a difference. Once I get ready to have it reinstalled, I'll mention it to the company installing it. I know the guy painting it brought some home from work to use, I ordered some from my GM dealer-not knowing the guy already had some, then yesterday when they cut the windsheild out, the glass company left the reveal moulding as well so it'd be there when they came back. Wish that would've happened with the weather stripping, coulda saved couple hundred bucks.

Yeah, I am real happy with the 92 trim. Looks much cleaner, and proably seals better. I wonder if anyone else has done this. Also I see on the earlier models that the trim down the door is small. The 89-up I think have the wider trim, which I think looks better and would be a good mod. I think most people just take them off though.

Good luck with the car, and definatly post pics when you get done.

later.

The trim on the outside of the windshield...???

WEll, When I painted my car in '97, my windshield was Original, and the plastic trim piece was kind of falling apart, so I pulled it out to paint... When I went to the Glass place they stated that it was rather difficult to just put in the strip when the windshield has already set, it was easier with a new w/s install... "But I got lucky" is what I was told.

Unfortunately some punks threw some small rocks over a bridge, they cracked my windshield, scratched a t-top, and chiped the piant... So I got a new windshield shortly thereafter.

Well, the molding around the windshield.

But yeah, I did replace mine with the windshield in. Just luck I guess. I just though while he had it out, it would be a good time to change to the newer one since he will have to replace it anyway. I took mine out mainly for painting also, and decide to go with the 92 molding.

at first no, I was not pleased, then I got used to it, I like it now, but it is no big deal for me... most people would never notice. Unfortunatelly if you go to a car show that might count against you if the judge knew what he was looking at and you were in a "Stock" class...

and the WIDE strip from my "Almost done, but never to be complete" 87 Formula... and yes, I have a Yellow fettish...

One of the things that will make the strip look better in these pix, is the top one is original, 87 material, it is weathered pretty well... the second, has about 8K on it, so there is a cosmetic wear difference... My question is this, can I still get the narrow strip?

I like the looks of the wider stuff, and yes you can still get the narrower stuff, read my above post. I took mine back to the dealership and got my money back. When they reinstall the windsheild, I can't imagine they'd charge "extra" for wanting the wide stuff, but nowdays, who knows. I still have awhile before I'm at windsheild reinstallation.

Finally all one color. Real hard to get a decent photo as the angle of the car, size of his shop, and the needed area for my digital camera were all kinda working against each other. Took these this mornin, the guy was still sleepin, we're gonna let it sit in his shop for the week to help the clear cure better before pullin her out into the 0 degree weather we're having right now. Then I stopped back this afternoon and he started buffing, but said the clear was still too soft for his liking for buffing, said he's seen guys litterally pull the clear off a car like a peice of rubber sheet when tryin to rush a buff job after painting (he's been workin on it all month so why rush now when we're at the finish line). He's still gotta paint my hood inserts and mirrors, but that's minor stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to get er home this Sat. Found a 85 Firebird a guy said he'd give me if I'd pull the new crate motor and tranny out for him, has aftermarket rims, shifter, but I just want the misc. plastic clips or whatever so when I put mine together I don't need to run to the supply store all the time.

Actual out of my pocket expense for this paint job up to this point is about $400.00 That was the material cost (my cost) to side his shed, not including labor. This spring, I gotta work on his garage-take out the existing 2- 9'x8' garage doors, cut out the center wall dividing them, install new header and new 18'x 8' door. Tear-off and reshingle his shop, about 11 sq. He's buying all the material, I'm just suppling the labor.

Sounds like a pretty fair deal. I haven't done and shingling but it sounds like you maybe getting the better end of the deal. Shingles will probably only take you a day to two days at the longest. Your car is looking good you make mine look really bad.

I personally hate shingling. I'm hopin to hire 3-4 guys this year for roofing only, then I can keep the roof aspects of the jobs I sell in house. His roof is just a 2 layer tear-off, but needs to have the ventilation/circulation issue address, so it's gonna run into some extra time. It sounds like a good deal, but when you figure he was adding "real" numbers on my paint job, and then if I added "real numbers to what he needs done, I charge double of what he does for an hourly rate, then, if I just bid it by the square ft. like a real job I'd do, I kinda get the shaft, but I'm not looking at it this way. I figure it's like our fathers and their fathers used to do horse trade back and forth to get what you need done, palin and simple. Everybody now days is all about the all mighty dollar and things are really impersonal as hell anymore, yes I'm young, but was raised old school so, what you take in the **** today will pay back in something else in the future, otherwise when you get picky everybody gets pisssed off and then nothing happens.

Hey, check out my new parts car! 85 Bird I just picked up-total cost: I gotta pull the motor/tranny Fri. night. Comes with a B&M star shifter (kinda cheap POS, but it'll work for now) the box and all remaining brackets/accessories still in back seat, new grant steering wheel (he says he wants it back, but I'm gonna work on him a little, actually too small for me, 13", since I'm switching to a manual box, but swap meets are starting soon) brand new Comp Cam still in the box in the back seat (still need to look up the p/n but he tells me it's a baby cam), those fancy 14", lol, aluminum wheels-needs buffing or acidizing, 1 of the 2 depends how lazy I get before I off them, brand new aftermarket oil press/water temp gauge-thinking of installing under the hood flush mount where my A/C & heater box used to reside along with small flush mount tach so when I'm tinkering under the hood I can monitor all the essentials, rear hatch cover-the roll up thing a ma jig, still aint got the hatch open, or crawled in the back to see what else I can find. Dude traded his 98 CBR for the hunk of **** (junk) then ran out of money and sister wanted it out of her driveway, right place at the right time Dudes an idiot!!! Saved me $60 for the other parts car I was gonna buy from a buddy that owns a towing service-exactly like my car when I got it, actually a sister I think, hit minor front driver side, but everything else looked intact-still might buy it and throw on a fender then off it for a profit to keep my project going. BTW-that's my buddies POS trailer, not mine. I have'nt gotten around to installing a winch on my hauler yet.

IHI, I'm jealous- of you AND the painter! Car looks great; the guy's doing a nice job!! That's what I want to do when I retire; work up cars into dream machines... (sigh) Can I talk about retirement, even though I'm only 26?

Dang, to bad those rims aren't 15" instead of 14". I just ordered 15" snow tires and still need rims for them to go on. Going to the salvage yards this Saturday to try to pick up some gems.

(uh huh, that's right, I said gems...)
