what NOT to do when changing your window motor

we all know how much of a PITA it is to get the window motor out of the door. well that wasnt so bad for me today. I got the motor out and put the assmelby on the bench and started removing the 3 bolts that hold the motor to the arms when the entire thing jumped off the bench and smashed into the wall. Apparently the spring had tension on it and when the last bolt came off it BANG. There was no way for me to move the motor to take the tension off either. Guess next time Ill put my foot on it.

yeah, i've heard of people cutting there fingers off doing that....I remember someone explaining it as a spring loaded sawblade, I'm just glad I never had to seperate the motor from the assembly when I upgraded from manual to power windows.

When i replaced mine, i only needed to swap the regulator, so the spring/levers stayed in the door. but, i read that drillig a hole in the gear and the housing and putting a bolt through helps the flying across the room problem.

my question is. . .how does one put the neccesary tension back on the spring to hold the window in place when reinstalling the motor?

there is a spring that need to go back on the regulator. Somehow, mine fell off after I put it back in the car. Do I really need that spring? the window works perfect without it.
