Power Lock Motors
Power Lock Motors
Are the power lock motors/actuators a dealer-only item? My power locks will tug on the lock mechanisms (you can hear them moving) when the switch is activated, but don't seem strong enough to actually lock or unlock the doors. I checked at my local Advanced Auto Parts store today, and they couldn't even order them. I expect (but will check) to get similar responses from Autozone, PepBoys, etc. I was wondering if anyone knows if they are a dealer-only item, if GM still carries them, or if anyone knows of another source. Thanks.

Hi, I read somewhere that you just need to clean and lubricate them well and they should work fine! WSorth trying before buying!

You're experiencing a common problem. I simply jerked the door panel, cleaned the lock mechanism with WD-40, then lubed with white grease. Do the window tracks while you're in there. You also might do a search on my name (JamesC) to locate a thread, Pics and Observations or something like that, that will perhaps provide some advice on noise in the door.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll try cleaning and lubricating them before I buy new ones (but I'm a little worried that the problem will come back in a few months).
Paul,
If you read this again, is that the GM part number? I guess you've bought them for your 87? Mine is a 92RS. But, they should be the same. Any idea if GM still carries them (I understand, for instance, that GM doesn't even carry new dash pads anymore)?
Does anyone know of an aftermarket source? I checked YearOne and Summit Racing, but no luck. I wouldn't mind spending 70 or 80 bucks per door (the price Paul suggested) to fix this once and for all (nobody wants to have to take their doors apart every few months). Thanks!

spitz,
I cleaned, lubed, etc. my 85 IROC's locks and windows, perhaps, four years ago. All still works very well.

It's been a while since I last had my doors apart, but I think the power lock mechanism has a little electric actuator with a rubber boot. Did you guys take the boot off and clean and lube the whole thing, or did you concentrate on cleaning and lubing the door latch mechanism itself? Which do you think should make the most difference?

My car never had power door locks, so I got all the wiring harness and hardware from junked thirdgens.
The junked door lock motors were...junk. Too old. So I went to the ACDelco website and crossreferenced other vehicles that have the exact same motors.
New Chevy Astro vans are one of the few new GM vehicles that still use the exact same motors. So I went to a junkyard, found a newly wrecked 1999 Astro Van and drilled out the fresh motors.
Works perfect now. Much cheaper than new ones from GM too.
