First off I have an aftermarket grant steering wheel, and I have 2 problems. 1. My blinkers work, but the lever does not pop back to position after I have turned a corner, and 2. my horn doesn't work. Anyone else have these problems? I bought the car with the steering wheel on it but have since done some column work to it, I had to go pretty deep and tighten up some bolts because the column had lots of slop in it and at the same time I replaced the turn signal cam assembly hoping that might cure the blinker problem but it didn't. There was a sort of 'button' if you want to call it that on the turn signal cam that I had to remove because when I turned the steering wheel, the adapter that was on the column would have ripped off the button anyways, so I had to take it off. Is that what is causing my turn signals not to work? I don't know much at all about column work so any info would be greatly appreciated.

 

we all encouter that blinker problem. it is most likely the cam. its worn. i cant answer the horn problem but mine doesnt work either and i have a stock wheel. never use the horn but i thinks its because it no work.

 

I replaced the complete turn signal cam assembly though so I know thats not the problem.

 

i got a grant challenger 13" 4 spoke wheel in my bird and my blinkers and horn works fine. Did they work before you put the wheel on?

Another thing do you have a chome wheel or painted(spokes) cause if its painted ya need a foil thing on it for the horn to work

 

I bought the car with the steering wheel already on it so no they didn't work. I do have a painted steering wheel but I've never heard anything about using foil? Also IIRC there are 2 connections or something on the back on the center cap, mine isn't connected to anything, do I just need to hook up some simple wiring?

I dont know what button you mean,,,but about your horn all you have to do is remove the wheel w/adaptor...and right there close to the big middle shaft youll should see a hallow post that is supposed to have a post with a spring and a contact in there with a wire on it (but someone prob took it out and lost it, some even cut off the hollow post altogether so they can put the wheel on anyway they want.) all you have to do is soder a wire to the brass/gold contact then connect it to your horn button (make sure your horn button has the spring on it so the horn plate doesnt lay against your wheel all the time. To test your horn all you have to do it touch a wire to the brass/gold contact to the big middle shaft,,,you should hear atleast a faint click click from the dash if your horns themselfs arent working but atleast you know your horn button works ok. If the paint is in the way of making a connection with the metal on your wheel (like mine did),,,grind off the paint with a dremel tool or a sharp chisel or sumthing,,sand paper even!

 

When I put my grant wheel on the horn did not work and the speakers would whine. I found out that the wire that hooks to the horn has a piece of plastic and spring on it. The piece of plastic broke and was not holding the wire to the metal. I replaced it and it works fine now.

jcurrie - I think that horn button you are talking about may be the button that i removed, it was a brass peice with a spring behind it but it looked like when I turned the steering wheel it was going to get ripped off

I'll have to remove my steering wheel and adapter and see if I can get some pictures for you guys. Anyone know approx. how much one of the grant adapter kits cost? Mine is pretty much completely stripped and I think the next time I take it off is gonna be it. Thanks alot everyone.

Spent 2 hours yesterday putting the Grant wheel on, so I feel for ya...what a pain in the butt! There's a real good chance that whoever installed the wheel originally didn't bother to hook the horn up..I know I thought about it more than once yesterday. Each wheel they sell has a specific adapter kit for the car...the one for mine was $23. Basically, you've got a hot lead to the horn alongside the steering shaft, and a wire that runs from that to the horn button. When you depress the horn button, it makes contact with a metal piece behind it, completes the circuit, and the horn sounds. On some Grant wheels, its a ring that fits down inside the wheel adapter that mounts on the column, but there's a lot of differences in styles and adapters. If I was you, I'd figure out what style wheel I have (check Jegs or Summit catalog), and call them direct. You probably don't need a new adapter, maybe just the wire, which you can make yourself. See if they'll send you just the directions for the adapter kit (as useless as they are...but its all you've got).

 

My blinkers wouldn't shut off when I turned either, but I had put the steering column in 180 degrees upsidedown

 

well after, unsuccessfully trying to find the little plastic retainer for my horns grounding wire, i went to the local hardware store and bought a door bell button that i could paint and matches the dash(somewhat)...y'all think it would be easy enough to wire the horn to the button to the dash, and i quess i'll have to take the column apart..thanx

 

You're gonna hook up your horn to a door bell button mounted on the dash??!!?? I guess you don't have to worry about safety inspections in NJ...cause that'd never pass here in NY. What's next....foot actuated windshield wiper controls?

 

Here is the wheels I chose. The guy on eBay didn't know exactly what car it came off of, but it was a mid-late 70's Chevy. I was guessing at a Monza.

 

well i think as long as you have a functional horn..lol..i actually test drove a 81 camaro rs that had the foot actuated high beam swith.....i may mount it on the dash or on the arms of my grant wheel
