I got a motor-less heater box for 45 bucks off Ebay. Was able to reuse my old A/C motor with a shorter blower fan from an old Cavalier.

Well, you could always do what I did and make your own... I kept running across deadbeat sellers that didn't have what they advertized, high $$$, didn't like the fact that it used the smaller fan..., so I made my own which holds the larger AC fan, and is actually physically smaller and 'neater' where I wanted it while still keeping factory like lines...

This is with it sitting upside down, the top facing toward you (I think it looks better in person, but I’m happy the way it turned out considering small details and sharp curves):

here it is with the bottom facing you (yea, I even molded in a fitting for the motor cooling duct...).

It's kinda a shame... It's much nicer then the factory piece but it fits in so well that mounted in the engine bay no one notices...

Well, in response to the dozen or so emails and PM's, I just snipped this from another thread that we had the same discussion in:

Well, if someone was willing to pay for my time doing it, sure, but to be honest I would be REALLY surprised if someone was. The problem is that what you’re seeing there is almost as much work and in a lot of ways more complicated then making a one off hood, and then prepping it and painting it. I doubt that there would be $20 difference in cost for the materials and supplies between that and a custom ‘glass hood.

The reason that it’s relatively complicated is that it’s a small and very 3 dimensional shape. Even GM didn’t try to do what I have there in one piece. I believe that theirs was cast in 3 pieces that screw together. I had to destroy my form to get it out.

In my case the shape was dictated by me wanting to try something funky with a turbo manifold and needing space, and I wanted something that kept the sorta ‘angular with reinforced ridges’ theme that gm parts have. Something that looks right at home with the rest of the GM stuff but nicer…. To be honest I consider mine somewhat of a hack job, I’d never let something that I was selling to someone else leave my hands looking like that (you should see the custom speakers/studio monitors that I’ve been building recently).

But if you really need something custom with that shape or a similar shape (say the whole thing curved instead of squared off or something) I could do that… get in touch and tell me what you want.

To answer the “how” question:
I took the stock AC style heater box, cut it up to get the shape of them mounting flanges and the orientation for the fan motor mount to them, I made a cardboard form for the rest of it, duct taped it all together into the shape I wanted attached it to a flat work surface, applied mold release (wax) to the whole thing and went to town with the fiberglass.

Ok, so ANY year will fit? We have some 80's trucks and cars in our salvage yard that have the non a/c boxes. I was going to take them to the next swap meet or sell them on ebay, but I wanted to be sure what they'll fit first.

sorry if i could of confused you 82firebird but as far as i know all year thirdgen standard heater boxes are the only true bolt on box..

i hear that the s10 box will fot but you need to mod it heavily, i did it right and bought factory pieces from thirdgen's so i could have the most easiest and successful a/c delete..
