Don't know if this is in the right thread. Has anyone ever replacedthe window motor on either side. If so please, any tips that would make this easy for me would be great. Help!
thanks

Randy,
Although replacing window motors can be construed as a "restoration", I believe you'll get a better response on the Body & Interior Board.

NGAFP, nice ride
I recommend taking the panels off yourself, to save on labor costs.
Take the car in to a mechanic/dealer and have them install the new motors...I had to replace mine and it is necessary to destroy the rivets to get to the old motors and remove all the guts. Then they need to be riveted again. It cost me about 268 if i remember correctly (2 yrs ago), but that was mostly labor of dismantling the interior of the door.
I honestly feel this task should be left to the professionals...it was a real pain in the **** when i thought i could do it myself but best of luck to you anyhow.

damn what a job that was!
Blain,
thanks for the recommendation, but i already completed the job.
wasn't that hard, but it was one of those jobs that just pissed you off. i've replaced the rearend i my uncle's jag,and even though that took about a week,i would rather do that again than replace those window motors.
check out my windows.

all u need to get those silly little rivets off is a cut off tool and a steady hand and they come off in seconds and if u have that stead hand u wont hit the door with the cutter. did my passenger side power window motor in 45 mins. and we used nuts and bolts and those jagedge washers.

when i went to replace mine, the haynes manual just said to take it to a pro... wasnt much help...
so i took the door panel off looked at it, and decided that i wanted to know more about this "spring that could kill me" before i went any further..
i figured a auto glass shop would know about it since they have to mess with them everyday, so i drove it there with the panel off and one of teh guys showed me how to do it..
this is off a 3 year old memory, so im just giving tips not instructions
tape the window when its up so it wont fall and shatter... use 3" masking tape if you can.. just run it half on the bottom edge of the glass, and half on the door.... btw duct tape can pull up paint.
there are 2 arms with rollers on the end in there... roll it off one end of the window, then back and the whole assembly comes out.
yes you had to drill rivets... when you get a replacement motor kit, it uses bolts... or you can buy/barrow a big poprivet gun..
the important thing that could kill you:
theres spring pressure on the arms..
you have to drill out a couple small rivets so you can remove the motor from the gear housing......and when you take the motor off, the arms will try to spin around because of a thick clock spring.... you need to put a bolt thu the hole there to hold them together.....
you can use bolts and nuts (with locktite) im place of the rivet, but i just bought another gun.... i like buying tools...
anyhoo just random stuff... :lala:

check the wires for the switch, like the ones where the switch plugs into that connector with the wires. my ground wire was like just layin in there and then it worked fine, becuz after we got the motor and all done. nothing happend an so we checked the switch and it was the ground wire that dissconected but didnt fall out.
