91' gfx vs. 88'gfx

Currently I have a 91' Camaro RS. Right now it has a 3.1V6. It runs good but the body is pretty rusty and the floor is rusting out of it. I bought it as a project car. Here's the dilema I recently found a good deal on an 88' RS. The body is in excellent shap and it already has t-tops. There is no motor which is fine becasue i have already started building a 350 for the 91' which i could put in the 88'. My only problem is that I like the looks of the 91' better than the 88'. Im wondering if i can take the gfx off the 91' and put on the 88'. If anyone has done this i would like to know how it turned out and how they bolted up.

Thanks,
Theo Mitchell

ya, just as easy as the 88 to 9, except for the 84 u have to use the front bumper cover from the 88 as well as the ground effect, or thats as far as ive heard and what can tell by looking at them

putting the 91 on the 88, it should all bolt right up. you can keep the 88 front bumper, but you will need to use the 91 rear bumper. putting the 88 on the 84, you will need to switch the front and rear bumpers, and drill new holes for the side gfx.

I'm sorry i guess i worded the question wrong. What i was wondering is if I were to put the gfx from the 91 to the 88 would it take on the look of the 91 as i prefer that look more than the 88. Are the differences in the years and looks basically the gfx.

thanks again for all the input so far.

It can be done but its not a bolt in procedure. I changed my 90 RS from 90 GFX to 91 GFX a few weeks ago. Just need to paint it now (pending fixing the rust on the roof).

The front bumper will bolt up, like 10+ bolts I believe. However on the sides (bottom part where front skirt meets fender) you'll need to either use double sided tape to hold it, or cut small slits on the bottom front part of the fender. The 90 and older GFX attach at that part with screws, the 91+ GFX dont. They have plastic tabs that slide into the slits in the fender. I was lazy so I just broke the tabs and used the tape. For the sideskirts, you'll need to drill some holes (4 on each side I think). The bolts along the top (door jams) will line up, but again the 91+ GFX attach differently. The 90 GFX and older attach directly with screws. Two screws behind the emblem (accessable after removing the fenderwells), one at the other end of the sideskirt (accessable from inside when u remove the interior plastic panel). The 91+ GFX use brackets on both ends, so you'll need to drill holes for the brackets. Be sure to measure correctly before you drill as drilling them a little off will make the sideskirt fit improperly. I also had to use a saw and cut a small strip of the metal off the body where the back part of the sideskirt attaches (didnt quite fit). Then to finish the sideskirts, you need to remove the interior doorpanels and attach that piece to the door (upper part of the sideskirts). For the rear bumper, you'll need to drill custom holes (2 each side) for the brackets that attach the rear quarter panels. The bumper itself bolts right up. Its not really that hard if you got the right tools (Thanks Revlimit!). Took about 2-3 hours. Looks much better aside from the multicolored thing ....

Then, to complete the look you'd want the 91-92 grid taillights, but that part is up to you.

Have fun!!

Thanks for all the info on what problems and solutions that u have ran across. This is probably a simple question but will the taillights bolt right in or is the modifications that have to be made there also.

Thanks again to everyone that has responded.

Puttin 92 gfx on a 90 is a pain. I got all the peices for mine cause some1 told me they bolted right up lol. I put the front peice on it was bolt on but like was said you need to cut slits on the fenders. To do that i took the peice down from my sisters 92 on 1 side and made a template then cut the slits with a wiz wheel. As for the 92 doors peices the holes didnt line up at all so i didnt want to drill ne holes in my door. Also the side skirts had to have different holes in the fender and the guy i bought them off of didnt even give me the brackets. And the rear peices that attach to the rear bumper had differents holes also. The rear bumper cover bolted right up tho. So i just molded my stock 90 peices to the rear bumper. So i was very pissed at the guy that sold me the parts. In the end tho it looked good with the 90 side skirts.
