Interior smell question

Ok, I know that I probably should know this, but why does the interior smell worse the hotter it gets outside? My interior is pretty rank...it smells like exhaust due to some rather large leaks. I fixed the leaks, but I need to have the interior cleaned to get rid of the smell. It gets on my clothes, skin, hair after riding around for awhile. But, when it is cold outside, the smell is virtually nonexistant. BTW, Frebreeze won't touch it. It helps for about half a day, but the smell eats it and sends it crying home to momma.

Momma always told me that funk and fragrance don't mix. Spraying febreze obviously is not going to completely alleviate the problem. I once heard someone recommend using WD-40 on it. I can't say from experience but me personally, I would take my intereor out and hose it down or something..

What's wrong with a little exhaust smell? One thing I've noticed that helps is to leave the windows down at all possible times. Since I park in a garage, I can leave the windows down 24/7. My car used to have a pretty strong odor from the smoker and air fresheners that were in the car, but now I hardly notice it after a summer of the windows down. It could just be that I can't smell the difference anymore. I don't know.

Rent one of those carpet steam cleaners with the hose attachment. Pull your seats and go to town. Shouldnt run you more than 40 bucks, and gets the job done every time.

Clean clean clean. Pull your carpet out and check for any holes and rusted out spots in your floor boards.

Easy to pull, harder to get back in. The biggest pain will be getting it back in with all the padding laid right and the bubbles out and the holes lined up. Thats how i did mine though, pulled the carpet out and steam cleaned it in the driveway.

Yeah, I had considered doing all that, before I left Florida, but never had the time/money. Now it will probably wait until I get back from boot camp.
