front GFX repair

I caught my front end on a driveway. Looks like I'll be curb parking from here on out. Has anyone repaired their front GFX with a triangle missing from a corner and how has it lasted?

I'm in the process of doing that now, I brought a 91-92 style GFX and it has a slight crack on the corner which I am going to fiberglass tomorrow. I think it's the proper way to fix it.

Don't use fiberglass guys, I can tell you from personal experience it will just crack. Either use epoxy to fill the crack, or look into getting a plastic welder. There's also a few places that sell this sort of equipment for repairs like.....

http://www.urethanesupply.com/

and

http://www.fusor.com/products/pr_overview.asp

Good Luck, I'm in the process of going with an epoxy repair. I cut a "v" into the crack, and filled it with epoxy. I've yet to sand, so I don't know how it's going to turn out, but my fiberglass repair was a waste of time. Fiberglass is WAY too brittle. It cracked right away.

That 3M Structural Adhesive in the link is a great idea as well.

Good looking out!

What brand of epoxy did you use that's over the counter?

I used Loctite "Putty" epoxy. It kneads up real soft and workable, something I've had experience with in a hobby of mine. Like I said, I haven't sanded it down yet to see what kind of finish I'll get, but it should be like any other body filler, just a matter of getting the filler sanded smooth. I'm more concerned about how well I notched my "V". I can always leave some overhang in the rear of the spoiler where you won't see it under the car, to give it a bit more strength as well.

The stuff dries hard, but it's also flexable, so it won't likely crack like fiberglass. Again, I can't stress enough to not use fiberglass. I can show you before and after pictures. Fiberglass filled over my crack so well, you couldn't see it and I knew where to look! But just the slightest bump caused it to crack, and then I was able to just peel my whole repair off in one piece.

I can tell you from personal experience fiberglass repair will not hold up. If you just recently bought a whole GFX kit I would just buy that one front piece. They are not that expensive.

My front bumper split where the blinkers are, the crack was about 1/4 inch...my shop used a plastic welder and it looks brand new, and it's held up for over a year now.

Any of these things work for an actual triangle of material missing? Nobody seems to have much more than cracks.

I'd get a plastic welder, I think they're $30 at harbor freight when they put them on sale, which is often, but that's just me.

if you look at the first 2 pic you can see the big chunk missing, just use some screan or some card bord, this stuff will bound any thing.

heres a better look at the in side of the front clip, you can see the card bord we used to form the missing peice of the clip.

or just go to a junkyard, and cut a chunk of urethane of a ripped up bumper and use that as most of the filler. then you basically have a bunch of cracks (depending on how you cut the pieces and how many curves you have)
