shift **** removal?

Ive a 83 z28 auto. The shift **** has a messed up button that doesn't work. It seems to be stuck down. I want to see if I can fix it but I don't know how the shift **** comes off. It's aggrivating becuase in the 10 different cars I've had I've changed most.

On my 91 there is a little pin infront of the shift **** that you have to pull out before the shifter will come out. It's towards the bottom.

I'm not sure about the year models, but I know they (Chevy) used two different styles of shifters, Try HaroGt14's first, If that doesn't work, just pull the **** off the top, it'll come off with a little bit of effort, and there's a small snapring around the base, get that out, and you'll be knobless so you can fix your troubles.

yeah, just pull the button off and then you will see a little clip on the base. Its a little tricky to get it off but once you get it thats it.

be careful not to punch your face like i did, you have to look straight down into the **** from the top once you pull the dentent button out. Spread a little u-ring with a screw driver and it comes off.

LOL... come on guys, just get the tool for it, it's all of 5 bucks at Sears, and takes literally seconds to take off those C rings.

The tool looks like a small wrench, except it has a tapered point on each side, to insert into the holes at each end of the C ring. Squeeze the handle and the ring will widen. Simple!

As far as the 83 shift ****, unless you're willing to break something, you HAVE to take out the shift button first. Just pull hard, it will come out. The C ring is underneath it, inside the ****, and then the **** just slides upward.

If you can't get the button off and are willing to break something, you can push the **** down. Use a solid tube and a hammer if need be, to knock the **** down the shaft without hitting the button itself. Then get a new ****; the shaft will be fine.
