3rd gen chop top?
3rd gen chop top?
has anyone chopped the top on their 3rd gen camaro?
i saw a chopped top on a fiero at the v8archie site. thought it
looked cool. the top was chopped 2 inches or so and the
windshield was leaned back several more degrees.
is it possible to do this to a 3rd gen?

Yeah, i was thinking of a chopped top (2") and instead of the
glass do a sort of notch back. i've seen one that looks good but
is still a bolt on. I would like to make a notchback like the fiero or
the ferrari 308 style. (with vertical glass behind the seats.)
I like the trunk lid on my convertible and thought a car would look
cool to combine that look with a notchback.
if you do a search on this site for "chop top" you will find a
few photoshop versions of a red 3rd gen choptop (look for the
posts about shortening the front end.

I'm 6 foot and I don't see how that would work. I have only about an inch or so of head clearance before my head smacks the t-top.
I agree that it has the possibility of looking really cool. At least on a notchback. I don't think I like the idea on a hatchback.

Yeah man,
everything is possible in the customizing world...it all comes down to how much coin you have to spread around and how talented you are. I 'thought' of a chop top on a thirdgen before(not for myself) The only part that poses a problem is the rear glass.

Chopping is the easy part, lower the windows, lean back the windshield and rear window. You know that...
Channeling is when you take through the center of the car and lower it there, say along the highlight line where our door bumper guards are. Its basically the same thing but a foot lower in the body... This also means that you might have to get differnet engine mounts, a shorter radiator shorten the firewall etc...

At the HotRod Power Tour 2002, there was a Black 3rd gen here at Speedway Motors. They had chopped the top of a nothchback, put the scanning light bar on the front of the car, and done some crazy stuff to the rear fenders, and put some of those fender skirts off the old cars that cover the rear wheels on it.
IMO, it looked bad.. mainly cause of everything besides the chopped top. I wish I would have taken a camera, but it was raining, so that wouldn't have worked out very well with a digital camera and water.

I remember a pic of that black car somewhere back in time on the boards. it has a really wild widebody kit on it, too. all custom stuff. it looks about 10ft wide and 3ft tall.
'Kustom' tems:
Chopping: cutting the roof pillars so the roof sits lower. (we al know this one)
Channelling: lowering the body around the frame. The suspension stays at the stock height, but the body sides are lower to the ground. (cuts in to your headrooom) This works well on a big, tub-like body such as a 49-50 Ford, and allows for extreme lowering, while still retaining suspension.
Sectioning: what Okfoz called chanelling. Cutting a horizontal band out of the body, to reduce the height of the body side. this works well on cars with tall, flat sides, such as (again) the 49 Ford.
