Auto body help...

I am getting ready to repaint my car and I am sanding down and feathering back all the chips in my paint. Most of it is going to the metal and I am using a self etching primer only were there is metal showing...... Well when I put a coat of the primer on I can see a line were I have featherd back the paint. I am using 80 grit to feather back and then using 220 grit to smooth it out. Now is it normal to beable to see the out line of the feathering with the primer or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be GREAT!

can you take a picture of what you are describing. How much of the car are you repainting? The whole thing or just a section of it. When you put your primer on there should not be any lines. body should be smooth, If you have definate lines now you will still have lines after base and clear goes on.

are you using rattle can primer. if so, it is not buildable. meaning that the layers that you put on will not build up. i used PPG K36 primer surfacer on my whole car, even the bare metal spots. this primer requires a gun, reducer and catalyst(hardner). when you put several coats of this stuff on, it will build up. then you sand it down until it is smooth. you must make sure that you fanned the chips out enough anyway. hope this helps alittle.

A good featheredge will show no lines. It should blend very smoothly. But like heavy_chevy said, you need to use a high-build primer. Its a primer to use to fill in sand scratches and stuff. When its all primered, you spray a guide coat and block sand to look for low spots.
