ROH ZS: Ordering Soon, Final Questions

I'm pretty set on ordering 17" ROH ZS rims for my TA. I know they're now not the most original rims, but I really like the look regardless.

Just wanted to run the setup I'll be ordering past the boards and ask if anyone has any final advice:

Front: 17x8.5, 245/40/17 Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712

Rear: 17x9.5, 275/40/17 Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712

As it stands I'll be ordering them from JDWheels since the price from Skulte and GroupWheels are almost the same after shipping.

I plan the offset and backspacing to be whatever JDWheels recommends, since almost every post I've checked, those who let them suggest the specs seems to have wound up happy.

I'm not concerned about being able to rotate them at all.

The combo will be on from March to December every year, so winter traction on the tires isn't a concern.

I can't seem to nail down whether or not the 275s will rub the innner wheel-well or stick out of the fender though. 275s like Adam's (white 92? formula) or FlyinLow's (silver GTA) don't seem to stick out at all, yet other random bird pics I've seen they stick out like all hell??????????? Any thoughts?

With that said, anyone have any "red flags" to wave about a potential mistake in the specs I'm missing?

I have the same wheels for my Camaro. My front is 17x8.5 with -7 mm offset and 4.5" backspacing. Front tire is a 255/45/17. The rear is 17x9.5 with 5 mm offset and 5.472" backspacing. Rear tire is a 275/40/17. EDIT: 40 in the rear is the right size!! Oops!!

Thanks man, its good to get someone's complete specs to work with. BTW great job on your car, its tough to get me to like a camaro

So 45 series brings the tire height closer to stock than 40 series? I always thought it was the other way around, that's why I've looked at 40 series in the first place. Hearing this I will look into it further now. Thanks again!

Just used the gear ratio calculator from f-body.org...

I enter the stock size tire (245/50/16) and get a 25.66 tire height

I enter the new size tire (275/40/17) and get a 25.66 tire height

Yet when I enter a 45 series (275/45/17) I get 26 and change

Looking at the code for that web page, the guy that made it seems to do some straight-forward calculations to get that number once you press the 'calculate' button. I'm willing to trust that as my guide.

Any more thoughts Crazy or others????

I too now have a set of SZ's for my Formula, I am waiting on the tires, I got Yokahama's for it. I am trying to paint the center of them Charcoal Gray and iuts been kind of a PITA to get the paint to stick, but I think I am figuring out how to get it to work.

Ordered the combo Friday over lunch folks, we'll see how this goes

Crazy I'm getting the same offsets as you it looks like (i'm guessing you got the specs from JD also)

Next time you hear from me it'll either be a new post about a fitment issue or pics of everything mounted. let's hope for the latter

Foz: how's the painting coming? any progress pics?

ps - thanks for respondin' guys

The Wheels look GREAT, unfortunately the paint sratches off really easy...

Crazy Hawaiin...

Your car looks great. Only thing I'm not crazy about is the hood pins.. But, they are a necessity on glass hoods.

Just thought I'd give you some props on your ride.. I haven't seen a pic until now.

Yes, I could have ordered them in Argent, UNFORTUNATELY I could not get the 17"x8.5" 's ONLY the 17x9.5's in the Argent. NOW that I have them I learn that I actually have clearance on all four corners so I could have ordered the 17"x9.5" for all four in the ARGENT. ( I HAVE BAER BRAKES )

Well, live and learn...

I did clear coat them... there seems to be some sort of a unpaintable coating on them... even where I scratched them up with sand paper.

What about powder coating them? That should work nicely..

I had that thought to powdercoat them, and ironically I have the means to actually do that.

unfortunately I would have to re-machine the lip if I did... so I opt not to...

I am currently working on plans to heat the GOOD wheels up to 200° for 30 min and see if I can slightly melt the paint layers together.

I'd like to make a correction to mine and Crazy's earlier discussion...

I was wrong about the tire height.

While 275/40/17 is a good match to stock height in the rear, I was wrong w/ the calculation for fronts.. 45 is pretty close, but my original assumption of 40 series was almost 2" off So sorry Crazy for dissagreeing, although it was the rears we were differing about, right?

Gotta give credit to Chuck at tirerack.com for catching that one and calling me up. I'm overjoyed to actually get some good customer service for once

12 Sec GTA: Hey thanks! Since that pic was taken I've done a few more things (new rims, new stance, tint, clear's). Still trying to figgure out what to do about those StarLocks (one of them is missing!) Right now I'm really concentrating on getting the car ready for the 749 ECM swap. The current FMU (Vortech PooPoo) feels out of tune @ WOT.

Jim 86 Bird: Yeah I gave you bad info about the rears. But no need to apolgize bro, what matters is you get the perfect fitment. I hope you're happy with the new wheels!! I'm gonna have to remember to work with Chuck, last time I dealt with TireRack it wasn't such a good experience. I'll tell him Jim sent me!

okfoz: Pretty crazy seeing the aftermath of a pressure washer there. I'm getting ready to do my spokes too. I want to make the spokes black and then polish the lip. Have you tried using engine paint? It worked out good for my friend when he did the stock 91-92 wheels black. As for powdercoating I was quoted $60 a wheel here locally (to do the spokes). If you can do it cheaper that would probably be the best choice (most durable). Another thing I was thinking about is anodizing the spokes (these are aluminum after all). There's a tech article here on TGO. Kind of hard to work with a wheel though (I think this was written more for smaller aluminum engine parts). Good luck!!

Hey crazy:

the tires and rims just came in yesterday

I figured out the whole deal w/ the centercaps and the retaining ring that looks like a star...

but what's the deal with the silver rings that come w/ the rims? they look like they're supposed to be inserted on the rear surface of the rim where the lugs meet the rotor/drum??????? Any clue?

I was baffled as well. I tried to use them like you describe and they got destroyed. I didnt know if it was a spacer or what. I later found out it is some sort of a spacer for disc rears but I still dont know how to properly install them. Haven't had any problems yet *knock on wood* but then again I have drum rears at the moment. Maybe call JDwheels back?

Thats why you need to sand the aluminum before you paint it :P Not just a light scuffing either, it needs to be sanded good.
