Hatch Trim Subject Revisited

I remember a few months back someone reporting that the metal trim on the hatch, which is very prone to rusting, can simply be taken off with no adverse effects to the vehicle. Mine, for the second time, has decided to start gettin' it's rust on, so I'm curious if anyone has gone through with this..? And if so...pics???

Thanks.
