Driver side door handles

Hi. I need to replace the outside driver side door handle, but do I need to take off the inside door panel to do this or can I do it from the outside. It is just the outside handle that needs replacing. Also are there any pins or other parts that have to be replaced with the handle. I think there were some kind of pins that kept the door handle in place. Do door handle kits have all the parts that I need to do this job? Thanks in advance. For an 89 RS Camaro. Thanks.

Yes, the door panel has to be removed. Peel back the plastic, reach up inside the door, and you'll feel two studs with stamped steel nuts (10mm I think). Unclip the linkage rod (it has a plastic piece that holds it on, pull it away from the rod and it comes loose), remove the two nuts, and remove the handle. Thats it. As long as you don't break the clip, or lose the nuts, all you need is the handle itelf. Some replacements may come with new hardware, though. I always shave them so I don't know for sure!

Retain the hardware. While you're in the door, clean and relube (with white grease) the window tracks and door locks. Check the following thread for other considerations:

One of the pics in the above will provide you with a better idea of how the door handle/linkage is put together.

if your mirrors are becoming slightly loose over time, nows a good time to tighten them too...
