Seats: Do they have a lock on them or don't they?

I sold a set of front seats to a friend of mine for his son's car. He brought them back saying how the latch on the back of the seats was broken and wouldn't keep the seats from leaning forward. I didn't think our cars did this?? I've had 3 third gens: '83, '88, and '91. All of them have a finger lever/latch on the outward side of the front seats, like you would hit to release the seat, but all my seats have been able to lean forward without using that latch.

What's the deal? Are my seats broken or is this thing just there for looks?

Thanks all.

Yup, Inerta locks just like the seat belts. Will only lock in place if the little pendlum inside rocks forward (or reverse) and locks in place. I believe that 4 gen seats have a lock all the time. 3rd gen seats definately do not. Previous threads on this..

They only lock during hard braking or an accident.

Ok so than why would there be a seat release lever in the back? I think this has been brought up a few times in the past.

If you park on a steep incline they can lock. You need the releases to open them in that case.
