hey guys i have come up with this idea to fabricate my floor boards out of diamond plate (1/16th)

basically my question is
will aluminum rust?

i dont want to take on this huge project and then have it rust on me

 

well it won't rust...i believe rust only occurs in iron but there could be some other oxidation you need to worry about...someone who remembers chemistry better could tell you

just keep it nice and dry, clean, and you should be fine

 

Aluminum does rust, it'll grow a white scale (look at aluminum rims). About the best way to keep it in check is by anodizing it and that can get expensive.

 

but cant you do that at home?

 

I remember seeing a site that showed you how to do it at home, the guy used a bucket some kind of acid, a battery, and i forget what else , looked kind of easy the way he showed it. I forget the site though, try doing a search on the net.

 

you could anodize small parts at home but i wouldnt try to anodize/alodine something the size of a floor pan at home, not sure if you would want to weld material with anodizing/alodine on it either.

 

Aluminum does NOT rust. It oxidizes, which is a step below rust. You can paint Aluminum the same way you would paint any car part, you don't necessarily have to anodize it.

The problem I see with this idea is quite simple, there is almost no way to weld aluminum to steel and make it hold, especially for the kind of weight your floor pan will have to hold (no offense to you intended). You would have to make your entire car out of aluminum, or rivet the floor pan in place.

The little i have in my car gets scratched sooo easy (fine ones mind you)...and cause its all bumpy, its kind of hard to polish. I bet if its on the floor it would get scuffed easy cause of little dirt on shoes. Not my cup of tea...but its some flashy i tell yah.
