My 4th gen console is in. Pics inside

It took me 2 days and alot of test fitting and cutting with a dremel to make it work but she is in. had to move the shifter back atleast 2 or more inches. But every thing is in and working except the shift indicator. I couldnt figure out how to make it work so its just in there for looks but it still lights up. I tried to put the power window switches in the ashtray but the shift linkage was in the way so i had to put them up top where you see them. It fits and looks great. What do yall think?

This pic is to prove how damn hot the drive shaft tunnel gets. This is the bottom of the air bag sensor inside the car. I had to remove it cause it was in the way.

looks really nice. I am adapting a 4th gen auto console like that to work with a megashifter...so far it looks like a lot of dream grinding as well. Will post pics later on it to show you.

I took the stock auto shift boot from my 91 Console and stuffed it through the shifter hole in the new console. Then I test fitted the piece on the console and moved the shifter through its gears to see how much slack I needed to leave then I used apoxy glue and glued it to the back of the console panel around the hole. It work very well and as you see it looks awesome.

looking good blurr. that mirror plate looks familiar

Did you go ahead and change the mirror directions around? Did ya find a way to make it completely work? Mine left and right are correct, but the up and down are now airplane style.

1WickedSS

I dont know how hard it would be with a stick.

It wasnt all that hard just a pain in the butt. The base of the auto shifter is taller than the 4th gen ones cause i had to move it back and cut some on it and cut alot on the console to get it to fit around it. I got the console for $50 from a friend and ou can find them all day long on ebay for about that price. I have no clue what all will be involved in it for a stick shift car, so Im sorry I cant help you there. Goodluck though.

Thanks dude, I just left the mirror control alone. But for some reason when I try to make the mirror go up or down it doesnt always work anymore. My drivers one has never worked since I got the car but the pass. one has always worked until I did this and now it is cutting up.

A stick console would be a direct bolt in (except for fabbing the window and mirror switches) to a 85-92 Firebird auto or stick car.
I have a auto but got a 6 speed console and put the switches on a plate i made in the ash tray, the ash tray on a 96 6 speed console in behind the shifter.

I was told the 97+ stick consoles are a pretty much direct bolt up into third gens. I'm going a local junk yard in the next couple of days.

Anything to get from the donar car besides the console or any short cuts on the install?

At long last cup holders. Little things do mean alot.

4th Gen console in 3rd gen Camaro

From what it all looks like it only looks like the F-bird guys are doing the console swap. Is it even posible for the 4th gen console to work in a 3rd gen camaro. The console has radio and HVAC mounts and trim plate on it in my camaro and the 3rd gen Firebirds have the radio and HVAC in the dash. How would somebody install just the console and keep the Radio and Heater box in place or would it just not work. But the pics look great wish i had the time and money (mainly money) to do this sway in my car.

The only expense you would have is buying the console from a 4th gen and the radio and heater control box from a 3rd gen Bird.

You can put the console in a camaro if you mount the Firebird Radio and heater control box in the Camaro.

However when you buy a 97 and up console, I do recomend you get the cigerette lighter wiring harness so both plugs will work. I bought my console from someone who already had gotten it and I didnt have the harness. SO I had to take the 4th gen cig lighter out and put the 3rd gen one in so it would plug up and work. Im going to go to a wrecking yard soon and get the harness from a 4th gen so both of my cig lighters will work in my console.

That looks excellent.

Could you have put the mirror controls between the window switches?

I got a console from a 02 t/a 6 speed and it fit right into my 86 t/a with absolutely no modification at all. There is however a lip at the very front of the console that sticks out and is noticeable. I will cut it off before I put it back in. I'd take pics but my car's apart right now. -Art

Went to a couple junk yards and pretty much all they had was in pour condition. Just got a manual one off E-Bay for $112.00 that lookes in nice shape.

I have been going through my shop manual and they don't cover how the consule comes apart.

Can anyone tell me how the shift handle comes off on the auto?

I can feel a groove on the lower front of the handle. can't feel a screw head thow. strange!

If you have the same T shaped auto handle I got then there should be a metal C clip that holds the shifter handle on. Its on the lower part of the shifter handle that faces the radio. Take a small small flat head screw driver and stick it in that slotted groove and pry the clip out. It should come out really easy. Then your handle will slide right off the shifter. Its a pain in the *** to put back in the handle but it will eventually go back in. When I say small screw driver I mean a small one, alot smaller than a regular screw driver. Goodluck.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hail: :hail: :hail:

I'm in the process of installing an 02 Console in my 90 Formula 5spd. I got some 4th gen switches and made a plate to mount them in the ashtray, I made a blank plate to mount some switches in just above the shifter(elec. exhaust cutout/linelock, etc.). I also just ordered a 4th gen leather e-brake assy and I'm planning on getting a hurst leather **** to match What ya guys think?

Thats nice

I don't suppose the forth gen switchs connected right up to the 3rd gen connectors?

If you don't mind me asking, what did you make the plates out of?

When I get the time, I was thinking of going by the dealer ship. There might have been a none smoking option that has a blank that replaces the ash try. It's a long shot but I will give it a try.

Post some pics when you get it in.

No the switch plugs are different, you just have to re-wire, not a big problem. I used a flat plastic panel that was a VCR top cover(LOL) I liked it because it has a texture to it-wasn't just smooth. If you want to email me I can send ya some more pics BlueTPI@aol.com

the 4th gen switches will only work with alot of modification, it'll make a nice looking job if done right. The wiring is different and you'll have to fabricate a way to mount them.
