Someone tried to steal my car question about repair
Just like it says they sliped somthing inbetween the weatherstriping and forced the window open. Then pushed it down and got in.
After that the tore up the collum to try and get the car started. When they coudlnt get it started the ripped the cd player out and messed up the dash.
My main question is how hard is it to replace the collum? The car wont start now due to what they did. If I take it to someone how much will it cost to fix?
The dash and radio I can fix myself just need to know about the collum thanks.

You should be able to start it.. how messed up did they make the collum? when mine was stolen all I did was put the key in, and pull the rod in the collum.. and a way it went.. kinda sick though how easy it is to start with out the VATS.. Aside from the high number of parts the collum is not to extreamly hard to do.. provided you have all the tools.. and some instructions on how to do it. I have a proper shop manual for mine..

They busted the plastic on the left side and some of the metal inside that connects to the keylock. Trust me I tried to start it b4 i paid 130 bucks to toe it home.

A lot of us feel your frustration. As soon as I can spare the money I'm getting an alarm with a starter disable.
We put far too much effort into our cars to let some ruffians and outright thieving knaves pillage and plunder our hard-earned spoils of labor!

That sucks big time
Stupid thievs.
Replacing your collum will be a slight PITA since you have air bags and you'll need to get another collum "91-92" Removing it is a piece of cake. 2 bolts hold it up in the interior and thers 1 bolt on the steering unit in the engine bay.

whoa, hang on a sec
he may not need to replace the whole thing.
i had the same thing happen to me.
can you take a pic of what they broke? if it looks like this : http://josh.swoca.net/board/mrdude/stolen/
then they just busted the plastic column collar.
you can get one out of any GM car from the 70s on up that has a collar that looks like that...... i still got mine out of a junkyard 91 though.
its a bit of a PITA to do, but not real hard.. you just take the column apart until you can get the collar off, then put it back together... using a new key lock cyl if needed.
sucks though... they did the same thing to me... when they couldnt start it, they jacked the stereo and ran off.
