for the shifter there is a staple thing on the front bottom of the ****, you can pull that out with pliers.

i bet anything that it is a camaro, they have a switch that has the pull out ****, that type is somewhat easy to get out, behind the panel, on the bottom of the light switch assembly itself, there is a small "button" that u hold in while u pull out the **** and that will allow it to be removed
regards
also since u said u popped the botton off the shifter, i take it your shifter is a top button type? if it is then there is a small c-clip on in there, you'll see it, that has to be removed, than the shifter will come off

If it's a Camaro, there's an even easier way than getting inside the dash...
The **** is held onto the shaft by a small sheet metal spring contained inside the ****.
Just take a small (as in short and tiny) screwdriver, compress the spring and voila...the **** pulls off the shaft.
