Should I Buy It?
This might not be the best place to post this question so I apologize in advance. Here goes.......I can get a 1986 Camaro with the 2.8 liter v6 with t- tops, 5 speed and power everything all for $500. It has high mileage on it but i'm in an auto tech class in my high school so i could probably rebuild the engine and the transmission there. Right now i have a 1986 Monte Carlo that's in good shape and is as reliable as all hell. I'm trying to decide whether or not i should get the Camaro though. I have two options as i see it: I could buy the Camaro, fix it up and sell it to make a profit or i could keep that and sell my Monte Carlo. I'm not sure if i should even buy the Camaro. Does that seem like it's worth the money? I have about $1,500 to spend in total (for the car and everything). Somebody want to help me out here with an opinion?

My only concern is that i'll go to check it out and it will be smashed up from an accident, everything will be beat to hell or it won't run or something. I need something to learn how to drive stick on too so that's a plus. Anyone know how much it would cost to have the engine and transmission professionally rebuilt? GM kicks unholy quantities of *** and they can last forever so the car might not actually be that bad but i haven't gotten a chance to see the damn thing yet. Thanks for the help by the way

Well, like said above, if it looks alright from what you can tell, and everything seems to be in decent shape, at the very worst you can just part it out and probably still make a profit, so it couldn't really hurt to go look, or even buy it.

"Fair" condition means that the vehicle probably has some mechanical or cosmetic defects, but is still in safe running condition. The paint, body and/or interior need work to be performed by a professional in order to be sold. The tires need to be replaced. There may be some repairable rust damage. The value of cars in this category may vary widely. A clean title history is assumed. Even after significant reconditioning this vehicle may not qualify for the Blue Book Suggested Retail value.

There is an black '86 IROC in "running" condition I might buy from my mechanic. I figured I could make more money parting it out just for the hood and the IROC wheels (especially if I polsihed them).

What do you guys think i could get for my Monte Carlo? I have American Racing rims on it, new paint job (done late April), it has about 87,000 original miles on it, it's a 1986, brand new tires (November?) and it runs unbelievably well. Only problem is that it's a 4.3 liter v-6.

But it show that even in bad shape it has some value and it does.
I paid $790 for mine and BB at $1750, funny thing it still is high. I was checking the other day and 10,000 miles or 200,000 my car is worth the same in good shape.

Is the real "official" price guide. It actually is a tad better on the question but things come out higher on it.
Oh and if you wanted to spend some of that money you save, you can still get a brand new crate 2.8 for $400 shipped on ebay.
That gives you a fresh 200,000 miles

1. Is that for a complete and fully assembled engine?
2. What about the transmission?
Thanks guys

Now for what you WANT, if you really like the Camaro more, go for it...but I don't think you will make alot of money after you are done restoring it and selling. No offense, but the V-6 third gen f-bodies don't command a big price. Rarely do people make money when going through a car to fix it up and re-selling...usually ends in a loss...but again, most people are fine with that as long as they know its a hobby.

Ive been doing pretty well
Bought a ford explorer and put some work into it $1000, sold it for $2700, and drove it 5,000 miles
Bought a grand cherokee and did some work for $3800, just sold it for $4300 after putting 10k on it, and beating it offroad, I would have made more but I screwed the car up almost as much as I fixed it.
My camaro now I could sell for a little more than I paid, but I love it to much and the 91's are a PITA to find around here.

The 4.3's are very good motors, and its not like the optional stock LG4 is a street machine . What tranny does it have?
