IMO, 4th gen seats feel way better, especially on long trips!!!

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
I started looking through this thread, to see if this has been covered already. But 11 pages & in 4 years, Mods haven't cleaned it up into a FAQ....
With a 4th gen rear, the stock 3rd gen rear offset 16" wheels are virtually a PERFECT fit & do not stick out pass the lip.

I have a 4th gen rear in mine and it is noticeably wider.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
I have stock 1992 rs/z28 wheels on right now and they do stick out further than the old rear, but they do not go past the fender lip. I can take a picture to show you if that would help you, other than that I guess this is beyond my expertise...what little there is....sorry I couldn't be more help...
4th gen rear, stock 3rd gen rear 16" wheels.

I'm running 17" x 9" ROH Snypers with 5" of backspacing, the blue Camaro has stock rear 91/91 16" wheels on a 4th gen rear.
There is a question of the LSx rears being a bit narrower than the LTx rears, but still wider than a 3rd gen rear, which I haven't bee able to find out yet.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Yea its not too bad of a process. As far as I can tell, the seats are relatively the same as far as comfort is concerned. Even if the 4th gen seats were slightly more comfortable, that difference alone wouldnt be worth the time and effort (despite how little it may be) needed to do the swap, especially to go from 3rd gen cloth to 4th gen cloth. In my opinion, and probably everyone elses, the reason the swap is worth the effort is for newer, better condition, more comfortable material, A.K.A. 4th gen leather seats or to add power seats.
they arent the same at all as far as comfort is concerned they are way more comfortable. as for the difference there is none if your not putting power ones in and the hassle is like 98% effortless i could have my gf do the swap if i wanted and cars are not her strong suit at all.

-4th gen dashes (with some modification and wire splicing) do a search
-rear ends (with 4th gen wheels)
-4th gen wheels (only if you use adaptors(do a search for vendors), but no need on the rear if your running a 4th gen rear end)
-seatbelts
-door panels (with some modification and cutting of panels) do a search
-rear coil springs (ive been told)
-drive shaft (most 4th gens had aluminum) Im not sure if the v6 ones will work??
-LS1 and LT1 (alot of extra work and parts but can be done) see engine swap forum.
-T5 to T56 trannys (extra stuff needed) do a search

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Just to start -
4th gen seats are a direct bolt in. If you get power seats from the newer car, then just wire them up like you would any other power accessory...you may even have the stock power seat wiring under your carpet.
Consoles...do NOT get the 93-96 camaro console and expect it to fit right. It leaves a large gap between the radio pod and console and doesn't fit the look of the dash at all. The 93-96 Trans Am console has 1 cup holder and the 97 - 2002 console has 4. A word of warning - these consoles are NOT direct bolt ins as many will tell you. Expect to take a rotozip to it if you want to clearance things. You may also need to move your shifter over to align it with the console opening. I have never seen a completely flush fitting 4thgen console in a 3rdgen - and I've seen quite a few from these boards that look perfect in pictures but are not. Expect to do some work if you want it even remotely close.
Here are some comparison pictures of 3rd and 4th gen consoles.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Hey I saw someone mentioning this earlier on the thread but didn't see an answer,
Is the trunk trim from a 4th gen a direct swap into a 3rd gen firebird? If not how difficult is this to pull off? I've been trying to look into this for awhile without to much luck.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
So it's been a while since I posted the pics of my cars 4th gen interior, but the one thing I never did was install the A-pillars and the rear B-pillar panels. Now I hear that the A-pillar panels can be made to fit as well as the B-pillars, but does anyone have pictures of these installed in cars? I'm looking to repaint my car this summer and I'd like to finish up what I started on the interior.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
I'm not trying to ressurect a dead thread, but i'm interested in the corvette interior swap that someone had questioned about. is there another thread for this? search turned up nothing.
Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Hi, I have read through this thread because I'm interested in swaping 4th gen seats for my 3rd gen seats. It seems from this thread that there is no prob with the front seats but I'm still not sure about the back seats. Someone said there would be a gap on the sides and someone else said that you had to pound the U straight or something. Can someone that has done this swap maybe post a picture of how it looks after, and what types of mods they had to do. Will the seat still be about to latch and lay down?
Also, is the alternator of a 94 V6 3.4L able to be swaped with the alternator of an 86 V6 2.8L?
Thanks!

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Ok thanks for the quick replies, thats nice to know. I just bought and 86 on Sat. and I thought they looked an awful lot like my 94's seats. I think I will try the swap, I don't really care for the faded 80's red seat that are in it now.
What about the alternator? Does anyone know about that. If it would work it might save me 100.00 bucks. Right now I need all the help I can get.

The 94 alternator would be a serpentine belt, 86 would be a v-belt, so no.

will the 4th gen ground effects hardware work on a 3rd gen or atleast the fender hardware anyway my car hasn't had them since my dad purchased the car from a used car dealer in 99. I wanted to get the hardware for it because I want to get rid of the zip ties I put on.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
I just switched my stock 3rd gen driveshaft out today for a nice low km 4th gen piece. What an easy job. Couldn't have been simpler, even for a newbie like myself. And only about a tsp of transmission fluid leaked out (I had the rear end jacked up higher than the front). Here's a pic comparing the two. Despite the lens distortion the two driveshafts the exact same length.

i think i paid about $125 for it, can't recall... i seem to have lost the slight vibration i had in 5th gear... other than that, no noticeable difference... but theoretically i should be getting better fuel economy lol

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
I figured I'd just post a few pics of my 4th gen swap'd parts to show fitment:

Like stated, the 4th gen seats bolted right in my car. Pulled them out of a 97', the size difference wasn't even noticable honestly. They latched and folded like stock. I had a 4th gen rear in the car as well, 4th gen driveshaft, LS1/T56, dash, console. The dash/console pic was before I "finished" it up a bit. I thought my console sit very well against the floor and the new and old dash. I ran a B&M megashifter with the 4th gen console but had a boot made for it, I had to dremel the console out a bit. I also moved my window/hatch switches to the front of the console, where the TCS button or coin holder used to be.

It has a indicator next to it to light up the gear selection letters, but the black leather boot is the same as what a manual tranny has.

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
New guy jumping on an old thread. Just found another thread about the exterior window sweeps fitting with very little work. I would like to try the steering column swap in my son's car. It's his first ride, and does not have tilt. I have found two pretty complete 4th gens in a local yard and this thread has me getting all kinds of ideas. I am for sure doing the seats and belts cause his belts are messed up and he will be able to adjust the newer seats better so it's kind of a safety thing to me. Thanks for all the great info.

just read the new hpp and they use the ABBOTT CABLE-X
www.abbott-tach.com

Cable from the tranny, up to the dash. Into a device that converts the mechanical signal into an electronic output, running a motor that operates thge gauges.

This would be GREAT if converted to an FAQ! Difficult to sort through all the info, and some is conflicting. I'm just saying would be helpful. Still not 100% sure that 4th Gen belts will install seamlessly into my 84 TA T-Top. Also, does anyone know how easy/difficult it would be to convert the 2 point backseat belts to 3 point belts? Lots of 4ths gen belt sets have 3 point back belts. Thanks in advance!

89+ 3rd gens had a 3pt too, so you cannibalize one to get the parts. But the rear shoulder mount is welded in to place, so you'd hafta chisel it off them weld it on to your car.

a t top/convertable camaro has reinforced rocker panels under the car.at the least you would need weld in subframe connectors.

This is correct, the gauges are electronic in the dash (except possibly the speedo and/or odometer). Based on my limited experience of pullying out 3 dash clusters on 86, 86, and 88 Z's

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
you can swap, dash, door panels, console, seats and seat belts without a problem, outr window sweeps. the rear panels and pillars dont work because 4th gens have different slopes and angles

Re: 4th Gen Interior/Exterior compatibilty List
Did you ever try this? I bought one on E-bay but has'nt arived yet. I found a 98 ws6 wing for a $125.00 plus a $100 to ship it. I think it will look cool on my 89 GTA

I guess that was a duh answer. I didn't even think about that. Oh well, thanks anyway.
