Hey, I was wondering if I could re locate my ignition to the dash where the lighter is in my '91. I dont really like it on the column and I dont use the lighter ever. So, I was just wondering if it can be done.

Just take out the cylinder along the wiring and move it wherever you want. This gives me a cool idea...
When you do this, buy a new ignition cylinder from GM (around $40) and put it in the original place. And put some kind of cover over the new one, like using the back of the cigarette lighter so that it looks like the lighter. This will make it just that much ahrder for any theif to steal.

I assume its duable..if theres enough space to clear out in that tiny spot... it would look absolutely horrible IMO tho big hole in the column and well turn key where the cig lighters sposed to be. If would be cool if you got a pushbutton like in the new BWM

I thought about the push button too. But I think ignitions in the dash are cool. Maybe put the ignition in the dash and the button on the column. Hmmm....I'll think of a lot of different ways before I actually do it.

I kinda like the idea, except for a few minor details left out. The ignition cylinder has no wiring to it. When it turns, it pushes or pulls a rod that goes down the column and moves the position of the ignition switch. So in reality, it could be done, but there would be a lot of fabbing to do.

plus also removing the cylinder from the column would render the locking of the steering wheel useless

And putting the switch in the dash makes it so much simpler to rip the switch out, or it could totally confuse them in the dark not finding the switch where it should be.
my friend (transam84 on this site) has a push button ignition on his T/A he puts the key in the column to unlock the wheel and starts it with the button.
Well...I dont like fabrication too much, so maybe the button on the dash would be better.
