Horn confusion.

This may seem dumb, but im completely lost with my horn. A friend of mine stopped by the chevy dealership and bought a horn wire. Problem is, I cant figure out how the darned thing fits in. I have the steering wheel with the round horn button. I figure if I can get a pic of the setup, I can figure someway to get it in there and get it working. Thanks for any help in advance.

Greetings 89IROCZTPI,

What part of South Carolina are you in?

Back to your problem, the round horn button just pops off. With the wheels turned straight ahead, look at the steering wheel. At about the 11 o'clock position you will see a little white tube in the wheel. On your new horn wire you will see a small plastic tube and a spring on one end. Put that end in the tube on the steering column, push the small tube down to compress the spring and turn it about 1/8th turn to the right. Connect the other end to the spade fitting on the horn button and pop it back in place. Here is a picture of the wire and the tube it goes in.

Thanks Trickster! I had no idea that the tube actually went into the steering column, that helps a ton. As for me, I live down in Aiken SC, well, more towards Lexington, or in the middle rather.

Trickster, how do you always have the most detailed answer to almost every problem someone posts here?

Hey Faded,

How are you doing, haven't heard from you in awhile. How's your beastie doing?
To answer your question, a lot of these things I have had to do to my 89 IrocZ while I've been restoring it since the previous owner didn't have the proper appreciation for a third gen. The rest of it, I read a lot from the boards here and the books and service manuals.

I am bringing an 82 Z28 back to life. The round horn button is off. I noticed the spade fitting on the bottom of the horn button is bent up and over. It looks to me as though the spade should not be bend over.......i.e. that it should be straight and flat. Does anyone agree/disagree?

I don't want to bend it back unless I have too because it will more than likely break/weaken it.

thanks.

What you can do in that case is go to the junkyard or pick-a-part and grab a horn button from a Firebird. The buttons are the same. All you have to do is remove the vinyl outer cover from your existing button and put it on the replacement. And yes, the spade is supposed to point somewhat towards the steering column.
