Battery Area Help

My 86 TA is in really good shape but the battery area (tray) where the battery sits on is all rusted out and there are actually holes going to the underneath. I guess the previous owner had a battery that leaked or something.

What options do I have to fix this? Is their an aftermarket tray that can go over this rusted metal or should I try fiberglass to the existing metal that is good to fabricate a shelf?

ANy ideas would be helpful. thanks...Dean

Can't you go to the bone yard and grab a good one? I've never noticed if they are bolted in or welded! But I'm going to go look now!!!

The battery tray is welded in and is part of the front inner fender support. So unless you want that area to be loose, make sure your repair is the same as stock. I had the same problem and was close to dropping the battery onto the front tire. You have to love these uni-body cars.

I dotn think that fiberglass will adhere to the metal very good or i guess what is left of the metal. I say just get a new tray or atleast a new peice of metal and place over it or cutt out the bottom of the tray and weld in a new peice of metal. I dont know what resources you have so that might help if you tell us what you have to work with.

I have the same problem. Classic Industries offers one for about 38.00 I think. GM replacment part. The tray is spot welded in.

Thanks for the advice. I have stuff to work with but I don't have anytype of welding equipment. I will check out the classic industry suggestion. I could always have someone weld it in for me.

Thanks again...

I had the same problem,i seem to recall that that part was dis-continued,I ended up fab'ing/welding in a new bottom,it did'nt look perfect, but it serves the purpose.
Anyways,i'm curious to find out if that part is available, keep us posted
thanks
Steve
