has anyone replaced their carpet and used the non-molded carpet? i was in Lowe's today and went to just look at the carpet they have there and they have the exact shade of gray that i need, however it is not molded carpet. i guess its kinda like outdoor carpet, or marine carpet. anyway, the texture looks just like anyother car carpet, and the color is what i need. plus for a 12x6 piece its only like $60. is it hard to get the unmolded stuff to work? and is it hard to get it to lay flat and not bunch up in places? i was going to use the piece thats in there now as kind of a guide and just go from there. sure i know it will take a little longer to install, but its gotta be atleast half way worth it because its so cheap.

 

and buy molded, dont r*ice out your rig. plus it a major pain to try to mold it and make it work. I have found decent carpet in wrecked 3rd gen, if you find one, buy it, clean it up really good and I'll think it can be had for allot less than 60.00

 

I got a of 12x6 carpet for $20 at a car show/swap meet. It's auto carpet but not fitted. My dad got the same stuff and put it his 69 camaro. It took a bit to fit in but it looks nice. Just take your time and glue it down. He also picked up some sound deadener which is moisture and water proof from Menards for $20. He put that in first and then the carpet. Take your time and it'll look stock.

 

the carpet wouldnt make the car look riced out, it looks exactly like whats in it now, and looks pretty much like any other auto carpet. i was thinking just what camaroman said, as long as i take my time, i think itll come out looking just fine. anyone else?

 

Ok its not hard to mold the carpet yourself. just cut it to size. I started up front and put the first section from the front to just under the front seats. just use a heat gun or hair dryer to apply heat to the carpet. this makes it more mallible (is that spelled right?) fit it to all the curves of the floor and then leave it over night it will become stiff and then the next day you can glue it down.
and the rest of you are a bunch of wussies I'm only 16 and I did it all by myself in 3 days. pre molded carpet how lazy can you get. sheesh........

Does anyone know of the best places to go to get carpet that looks decent? I heard Lowes but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? I was wanting to do it myself without going the route of molded carpet. Thanks

 

If I were you, then you'd be me, and you would've already realized that molded carpet is hard enough to get to sit perfect. Non molded, flat carpet would be an absolute nightmare. You will never get that to sit flat; the floors of these cars have too many curves. Spend the extra few bucks, or find some in a junkyard. You're looking for gray, not black; Shouldn't be all that hard, and would be the easiest to swap.

But then again, if I were you and you were me then I guess you wouldn't really need carpet anymore, anyways...
