[90-91] - How does needles light up on instrument panel?

How does the needles on the instrument panel on the 1990-1992 Camaro's light up? I don't see any side lights lighting up the ornage colored needles, and I don't see a light behind them. They light up but where is this light coming through?

The reason I ask this is to find out exactly WHY needles do not light up the same with aftermarket indiglo, reverse indiglo, nor white faced guages. Seems that the needles are all hard to see once these factory intrument panels are replaced with one of the above. Why exactly are they not nightly up the same?

Thanks

They are backlit from the cluster lights. The needles are clear and prisim shaped. There is paint on the backside of the needle to give its color.

WOW! You did not draw that up just for this message did you?

I understand how the needle lights up now.. Could someone please explain why changing the "guage face" itself would cause the needles to no longer light up?

When you see cars with the aftermarket guages like the white faced ones, or indiglo/reverse indiglo guages, the needles are always dark and hard to see. If the guage has "halo's" where the needle is, then the halo tends to show a black line where the needle is.

Yea.. I did but, it only took like 2 mins using MS paint. Less time then it would take for me to describe it anyways.
I vaguely remember this being talked about when people first started getting the indiglo gauges. IIRC, you take the old 194 bulbs out which lit the needles. The glow from the gauges just isn't strong enough to light the needles like the bulbs did.

Here's a link that may interest you though...

so you have ordered the reverse glow gauges? do they work like on the website i need a new instrument panel and these are cheaper. so i was wondering how they worked/looked. i tried doing the same thing by replacing all of the bulbs with blue.
