Airbag Removal Installation? ???
Airbag Removal Installation? ???
I have a 91 Camaro. The airbag has a slight tear in it, more like a seperation. I have a stock replacement that is perfect. How would I go about swapping them ? I am worried about putting the new one in and connecting the battery, then the bag going off ? Is this safe to do ? Thanks Guys

It's not too hard to do. It is also safe to do as long as you do it right. My wording may not be perfect, but it should do:
Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the SIR fuse in the fuse block, and remove the knee bolster (the plastic stuff directly under the steering column, there are 5 torx screws holding it in). After that is out, you should see a ton of wires and the steering column. Look about halfway down the steering column and you should see a big yellow wire with a connector on it (it is also yellow). Pull the green holder out and then disconnect the yellow connector. Now the air bag is disconnected.
Then just remove the four torx screws behind the steering wheel (I believe they are T-25s), FYI the torx screw on the upper left hand side is going to be hard to get to since the turn signal arm is in the way. Then pull the airbag out as much as it will come out, disconnect the yellow connector piece and the horn wiring, and you are done with the old one.
To install the new one, just do the exact opposite. If you need help or don't understand what I said, just post here or PM me. Hope this helps!

SOrry to revive this topic but I am doing the exact same thing tommorow (Swaping bags) and was curious if I should wait a while after disconnecting the battery and fuse? or if I can just go right ahead with the process?

No waiting is necessary. Doing all the wiring disconnects is the safest way to do it. Altho I have to admit I've seen it done without doing anything other than taking loose the 4 torx screws holding it on, disconnectng the wiring clip on the old one, attaching the wiring to the new one, and re-tightening the 4 torx screws......

Ok thanks. I will be safe and go through the steps though. Would be mad if I ruined a perfect air-bag.

Trust me I would be more mad about the airbag lol. A perfect once doesn't come cheap. ...My nose...I have health insurance that can be fixed for free

How would one of those react after an engine swap? I'm going carb. Really I just want to get rid of mine but I don't know if I'll be able to get another wheel right away.
I guess I could just remove the bag and place the cover back on.

The housing is actualy permently attached to the bag... the screws in the back of the wheel that hold the airbag on attach to the aigbag itself.....so in other words....you can't just have the housing there.
You could disconnect the air-bag wire and remove the Inf. Rest light bulb.

What is the possibility of one just going off even when disconnected? Once a impact signal is sent is the reaction fully electronic? Or is part of it physical? The physical part would be the part I'm worried about.
Kind of like expoxy. It will never adhere
