Hatch Glass Leak

I have a bad leak coming in between the glass and the sheet metal at the lower part of the hatch. It soaks the trunk.

Is there a seal between the glass and sheet metal ?

ah yes, i just changed the rear window on my trans am and their are two pieces that go under there. You cant get either of them from gm , so you gotta do what i did, first piece, go to newgmparts.com . The part number is 20328200. You need this one. And the other, this stuff is the gooey stuff. Its buetyl adhesive strip. It isnt sold under this name . What it is , is windshield sealing stuff. Now they use gel to do windshields . 3m makes the stuff u need , the exact name it " Ribbon Sealer" Auto glass replacement kit. i got the 3m part number too, since im lookin at the box right now . 08614, i got the 3/8 inch kit, the shop manual calls for 5/16 but it looked too small. Now i dont drive my car in the rain unless it has to go to some place, exhaust shop, window tiniting. Stuff like that . I did that project a few days ago and ive been letting it sit in the sun everychance i get , since i have a garage. I didnt know i could get the first strip , i know its cheap but shipping will be 10 or 6 , i forget , but get the strip anyway , it covers the advesive strip so if it doesnt look perfect no one can see it. I dont know to this day if mine will leak. So i dont know what to tell you , but this is what your supposed to use to do it. SO i dont see why it wouldnt work . Hope this helps. If you need anymore help pm me.

Thanks Nolan !!!

I was thinking it was just a bead of sealer. But I think the leak is probably the secondary seal. Probably dry rot or something.

Anyway thanks for the detailed help.

by sealer i hope you dont mean silicone, i did it with that first and it doesnt look good. So do it the right way and you wont have to do it again if you do it right the first time.

newgmparts.com is a bad link. I have the same problem I think. My car is parked on a down grade and my trunk is soaked. I put a new GM trunk weather stripping on and it seems to be leaking where the lower part of the hatch meets the weatherstripping. Looks like some black things on the hatch. ANY HELP PLEASE!!

I used two pieces of tape across the window and the metal deck lid, and then laid down a thin bead of clear silicon. I smoothed it and then peeled the tape immediatly before it dried. If you take your time and use some finess it comes out to the point you hardly notice, and it seals.

Good luck

Re: Hatch Glass Leak

I know this is an old thread but it is a good one. I just ordered CRL 1303 5/16" square butyl adhesive.

http://www.filmtools.com/butyl.html

Will follow up with how it looks and works.

Re: Hatch Glass Leak

So I am in the process of putting my deck lid back on the glass and have been searching for part number 20328200 everywhere and all places say "...discontinued part...". I noticed in the manual it states "...or equivalent...". Without nothing to compare it too I don't know what an 'equivalent' part would be? If there is anyone out there that could send a photo or part number to order it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
