Hello Ramair21,

I don't know if that guy you talked to had his head up and locked or what. According to my dealership they are still available for use in the 4th gen camaro's. If I can walk by a 2002 camaro and see the exact same shift **** in it as what was originally in my 89 IrocZ, that tells me they will work. Besides that, I have replaced several of them on cars for friends whose shifter had seen better days.

Hang on a second....

The 3rd Gens (like my 91 Formula) did not use a metric thread I don't believe for the shift ****. But the 4th Gens certainly did! You might want to check this a little further, the DEALER may be correct!

What threads are you talking about??? My shift **** on my 89 Iroc doesn't have any threads??

Are you thinking about the manual shift ****? I think we're all talking about the automatic.

Yep, I'm talking about the thread on the shift lever the manual **** threads onto. Sorry for the confusion!

Not all auto shift ***** are the same. There are two different kinds on thirdgens, which require two different shifters. Unless of course, you plan on busting out the dremel.

My 86 originally had the round shift **** on it. I bought one of these:

It didn't fit onto the shifter arm unless I modified it. Slow88lb9 was gracious enough to send me a shifter he didn't need anymore, and it fit perfectly.

[edit] As for your application, the IROC **** should fit fine in the RS.

Cayse is talking about the old round ball type shifter **** that had a "C" clip inside the **** that held it on and he is correct in that the new style would fit on there. But there was no way to secure it without some modification and vice-versa for the old style replacing the new style. Best way to remedy that was to replace the shifter assembly as well.

Any GM shift **** that is the staple type will work in your 89 RS. the older round ones with the clip on top won't

Here is a picture of a mid 90's Grand Prix shifter in my Iroc-z, much nicer than square ****.

The only ***** that are threaded are the manual transmission shifter *****. The automatic shifter ***** on our cars are held in place by a steel "U" shaped pin that resembles a big staple. See picture below. The older style round ball shifters that were mentioned earlier were held in place by a "C" clip inside the ball **** and the **** was removed by pressing down on the **** until the clip was exposed and using a small screw driver or pick to remove it. The **** was then removed by pulling up on it. A few people who didn't know about the clip gave themselves double hernia's trying to pull the **** off. See the second picture for the old style.

The **** in labrats car is what is known as a cobrahead or snakehead ****. I also have one in my car that cost $5.00 and a few minutes time pulling it.

Just a minor correction for anyone that's planning on doing this, the **** doesn't move down the shaft unless it's broken, so you do not have to push it down to expose the C-clip. A C-clip tool is your best bet (got mine at Sears hardware), but a small screwdriver and some aggravation will do just as good.

By the way, anyone have a #811 retainer they might be willing to drop in an envelope?

I have a broken cobra head shifter. Can I replace the cobra head with a t-shaped shifter ****. My old one uses the clip. I have a 1989 rs automatic tranny. I have been using a replacement **** that uses set screws but the **** never stays snug on the rod

I used a small flathead screwdriver and an awl. Used the awl to hold one end of the clip while I pried the other end out with the screwdriver.

I am definitely replacing that shifter. It's such a POS, and worse yet, the plastic is cracked so that it tends to rotate while I hold it.

Not sure I like the wider shifter though, I was hoping that I could simply replace it with a shifter from a newer thirdgen. Guess I'll just have to replace the whole darned assembly.

That is what you would have to do if you want one of the newer style shift ***** or you can take a shifter assembly from a later model third gen firebird or camaro.
