Holy Snot, paint jobs are expensive
I went to a shop around here to get a quote on painting the t/a and fixing a few, and I mean, like 2 or 3 small blemishes, and they wanted $5,000. What the hell??? Has paint become that expensive lately? I know maaco paint jobs are crap and you get what you pay for for $500, but I was expecting to pay maybe $1500-$2000, but $5K that's unreal.
end of rant.

It all depends on what you want to do.....changing colors is expensive. Also, labor on repairing body damage can make it that much more expensive. Perhaps you can replace/fix the body damage then have it painted to save some $$$
Also, don't rely on one shop's price, look around.

well he said the body work was only $500, and that the paint and prep materials were $800, so that leaves $3700 in labor to paint it, maybe if he was doing it with a single hair brush.

It really boils down to the kind of job you want, and yes, the paint these days is very expensive, as is the labor. The days of the 800.00 paint job are gone. With new technology and costs of running a shop (trust me I know), it's not easy keeping afloat.
Check with the guys around here that are re-doing theirs, most of them will probably tell you they got into waaaaay more than they planned.
What about the rest of the story? any parts involved? The "minor blemishes to you may be something that a trained eye may see as a large ammount of work. Is he going to disassemble the car and do a nice job? or just tape everything off and blow it?
He also should have given you an itemized estimate, unless you were just checking around about prices...
These are all questions you should ask yourself and then determine if the car is worth it to you.

paint costs. just to give you an idea i got house of color paint and all suplies needed reducers cleaners ect 1200.00
now this is not a shoot and go paint either( one stage)
this is not a base clear two stage
it is for a three stage candy.
so maybe you can get supplies for 800.00 ( not including sand paper and all the other 1000 peices.
but for me it is a project car and i enjoy doing the work. I i get good who knows may have a new hobby. I have a daily f150 driver so time is on my side. ( gets paint next)

one of the guys here, said if i prep the car and take it to him with everything off the car (key holes, ground effects, and rear tail lights), he'd paint the whole thing for 800, or i can take it to mexico and get everything done for about 600

I got 2 quotes here in the Seattle area.
The quotes were 3k and 3.5k plus body work.
So I take that to mean 3k to 3.5k for just painting the car.
Since my car has dents and rust, I can get another car for less than getting it fixed up. But this was my first new car so sentimental value is causing me trouble.

believe it or not the guy in mexico does a really good job, ONLY if someone mexican takes the car down there, im not going that route though, i smashed the front end this weekend so got a whole new can of worms to deal with before i even consider a full paint job
After storing my car for the winter and getting it out I noticed one of my bungy cords had rubbed up against the drivers door and scratched my paint down to the bare metal. Went and got a estimate for it to be painted and it was $1100.00. This was just for the drivers door the top part about a 4 ich round spot. So I guess painting is very expensive period!!!!!!

$5500 should get you a show quality paint job that includes removal of all parts that would otherwise be masked, and a wetsand & buff at the end. A regular "sand, mask & shoot" paint job should cost around $1500-2k as long as you don't need much body work and you don't want a show quality paint job.
Either that, or the body shops in your area are finally charging above the pitiful $32/hr labor rate that insurance companies pay. Around here, body shops still work at that rate.

1,600 was my esitmate for Left fender, Hood, and Front Bumper, yes just thoes items, I'm deffintly looking else where. No body work at all just paint, they charged to take off the blinker and hood grills (T/A HOOD). And they also tried to charge me for some new fog lights, I have a firebird so I didn't have foglights so I'm juts using the slots as air ducts but they I guess just assumed I wanted Fog Lights but I got that changed right then.

Another thing to do when pricing paint jobs is to look around at the cars that are there. Then go by the place again later. If all the same cars are still there, you might want to choose a different place. You don't want them to keep your car in paint jail forever.

thus far..
i have spent $14,000 on paint for my iroc..but its a full pearl paint job.
you have to shop around for the best price...but the best price isnt always the best painter..
make sure you see some of the work that they have done previously (and there own cars) and then decide from there..
but for a good job...expect to pay at least $4000 canadian ($2700 usd)

U have to find a shop that does not do INS. work it takes alot of time to paint a hole car wet sand and buff. They can do 2 or 3 smaller jobs INS. pay. to your one complete paint job. And make just as much if not more in 1/2 the time. Here in chicago they pay the shops 42 HR.Go to one of the shops there and ask one of the body guys if he does side work or know anyone that does. I have people asking me alot. And right now alot of the shops are real slow so most body guys and painters are looking for side work.
