I can't tell if this is a Gentex mirror or not, since it has no exterior markings and upon initial disassembly, I decided that it was too old/fragile to damage, so I left well enough alone... It is the motorized mechanical auto-dimming mirror, not the electrochromic ones seen today. (I don't think they were invented yet back in 1985...)
Any thoughts? Thanks!

You might check the following thread (RPO DD8 Mirror, inside rearview automatic was available in 86 and 87 or thereabouts):

I have that mirror in my 86 iroc.I had to take it apart to fix it.They are ridiculously overcomplicated but the amazing thing is that they actually work like a charm at night. They seem to know right when you really need them to flip.Just don't get distracted by the sound of all the little motors and gears wirring away inside it as it's doing it's stuff. There are two little rubber drive belts inside that dry out that you need to change to get them to work right. If you know anyone who can fix car stereos they should be able to do it with no trouble.

Yes they were available in 85. My freinds cousin has an all original 85 z28 and it has it.

But the question still hangs... Who makes the darned thing?

Yes, but do they make the mechanical ones...? I suppose this is all irrelevant, since I only wanted the info to add to my collection of wiring diagrams for auto dimming mirrors...Originally posted by 1986tpiiroc
