That was the "Recaro" option (Recaro seats). The seats and door panels were "ribbed" and each rib said "Camaro" on it (Very tacky), in 86 they just said Camaro on the headreast and on one rib on the door panels.
I hated it in 85 and got the Berlinetta style seats instead...much better looking.
And there is no way it was $3k in 86, the option for them was only like $600 in 85.

Actually its not the "Recaro" option. The seats were made by Lear (based in Michigan), no relation to Recaro (based in Germany). Recaro seats were a Trans Am only option and looked completely different.
FWIW, both companies are still in business and still making seats - Lear does about $15.7 billion in sales each year which makes them the worlds largest supplier of interior components.
I own an 84 Z28 with the red/orange/yellow "Camaro Camaro Camaro" seats. Yeah, its tacky and obnoxious...and I have a hard time contemplating that anyone thought it was a good idea, even back in 84. But its a part of the car, its an attention getter, its rare, and I have no intention of changing it. Its no different than the people that restore 69 Camaros with orange houndstooth interiors....
Try pricing out a complete new interior sometime made from NOS material (if you can find it)....and I dont mean the "sorta looks correct" covers that are on the market now....$1300 for what he has there is a fair price.

You know, rare option are always worth more. Regardless of the fact that they are "ugly" or not (which I personally don't think they are). Not to mention it's original and never been used. That is awesome. I'd probly take 4th gen leathers over them personally but only cuz I;d feel bad once they got worn out.

Tacky is more of an opinion than fact anyway.....so many of you guys love that '91-'92 Z28 wing, and I've always thought it looked like a cheap Ferrari F40 ripoff......totally out of place with the lines of the car.

Went for almost $1600. Pretty unique stuff, worth the money to the right person, and that right person saw it this time.

I guess what goes around comes around....check out the seat fabric in the 2005 Mustang....yep, its "MUSTANG MUSTANG MUSTANG" although its a lot more subtle than the Camaro.
AS5 is the RPO for Recaro seats....for a Trans Am. If someone has pics of an IROC with factory Recaros though I wouldn't mind seeing a picture.

It's a lot of money? Insane? Compared to what? Finding that interior in brand new condition is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for somebody who's doing a stock restoration.
Whether or not you guys think it's nice, or tacky, or whatever is completely beside the point. It's tough to put a pricetag on something that rare. Obviously somebody thought it was worth the money.

The drivers side seat bottom fabric alone was quoted as $345 to replace. The stripes on the car, when available, priced out at ~$1k. To replicate the 93 Pace Car with paint, stripes and interior would cost about $4k for a $990 option.

I know of people that paid $1000 for the interior of the 93 in 1993. I also know of people that bought the stripes in 1993. GM didn't raise the prices on these things in 1994. The prices I quoted were GMs prices and that's what people had to pay to get them.
Has anyone looked at the cost to upgrade the stereo in their car. Maybe $100-$300 for the good setup. If you went to buy it from the GM parts counter, it would be about $600-$800.
What I'm saying is, you can't build a car with the parts counter parts for the same price you can buy the car already assembled. That's the way it works. I'm sure the $3k is close to accurate for original door panels and top of the line seats. Call the parts department and ask them how much the door panels and seats to a 2003 or 2004 GTO run.

I've still got some of this "NOS" fabric hanging around, Probably the only guy in the world that still has some left !! That goes for the Black/Grey fabric anyway,........ I've got Red/Orange as well as Tan/Brown fabric too !!!!
Tacky - Yes, but being rare it makes the interior stand out from the croud !! I had a set of Firebird L.S. contour seats recovered in the Black/Grey fabric because the Pontiac offered the seat on both sides of the car. ( Camaro's only got a drivers side version due to a lack of capacity at the factory.)
See a custom thirdgen interior here ------>
P.S. The car has a T56 in it now,.............. !
