Center Caps
I am down to one alloy wheel center cap. The animals here in Brooklyn should be shot.
I have the beautiful Firebird 'turbo rims'. After purchasing four new caps, they will have to be secured better. (either the vandals, or the caps). I have an idea or two on how to keep them fastened, but would also appreciate any input from others.

Not an objectionable idea. The negative aspect would
rear its ugly head during a tire patch or tire change. I never permit plugs.
I was thinking along the lines of glueing bicycle brake cable inside the cap, and permitting the ends of the thin cable to get squeezed between the back of the wheel, and the mating surface of the hub/disc assembly. This would only be good if the cable is very thin and does not make the wheel seat improperly on the hub. Thanks, though.

Make sure you have really nice tires before you try glueing the cap to the wheels..
You can't balance the wheel without having the center cap come off..
Though I haven't done it yet, the best idea would be to take one of the metal brackets that are used on the rear wheel caps, and bore out the center hole to clear the hub on the front wheels.. Then you'll be set. I think you have to increase the diameter by only like 3/16" or so.

I lost you someplace. These plastic caps have tiny tabs that hook onto the hole. The tabs are plastic, or metal on the newer G.M.-made units.

Some NOS Gm center caps for our cars come with plastic tabs that will fit perfectly on your stock rims. They should not be able to come off while driving.

You know what the creedo is here?
What's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine too.
I live in a good neighborhood, but sh.t can happen anywhere, I guess. On a different note:
I drove my Triumph up to Vermont every summer.
Never put the top up.
Never emptied the armrest or glove box.
Never removed the radar detector from the windscreen.
Never removed the easily-removable Pioneer radio.
Never set the alarm.
Nothing happened in 20 years of summers in Vermont.
They are a different breed of human up there.

I've had mine off once since I put them on.. and not scratched them. you just need to be careful.. Also if yo uare gonna be taking the car to a tire shop.. take them off at home first .. never let the shop do it.. or you'll be buing new ones.

This is one of the reasons why I am still single at 47. Sort of a mistake, though, because I love kids. Then there is the thing about continuing your lineage.

The continuation of one's lineage could be considered morally and/or ethically questionable in today's world, and I base that on nothing more than foreign and domestic events over the last 10 years at least. Just something to think about.
Now, then...keeping this 3rd gen-related - have you considered IROC-style rims that have the cap mounted in the center of the wheel itself? With the RS-style rims, the center cap is cylindrical (actually, it's a conic for those nitpicky math wizards
). The IROC rims have a flat, round cap that snaps into the center of the rim. I tried removing my Z28 caps (the car isn't a Z28 - it's a 1989 IROC-Z) in favor of 'IROC-Z' caps, but I found that I was risking damage to the caps as well as the rims by using a small flathead screwdriver; it would've been easier to remove the rim and pop the caps out that way. Does that make any sense?- 89_IROC

The 'turbo-rims' are way too classy to replace. If the grease caps on the front hubs were flush, as the rear hubs are, there would be the option of using a flat/round cap.

Having lived in Staten Island, I know the real deal !
I think the silicone idea is the better one. Unless you could modify the caps with a bracket inside to hold a retaining wire that could be wedged between the wheel and the hub.
R U sure it's the kiddies that are getting them and not the wonderful NYC potholes?

I don't like the center caps that 'clip' on...
so I'm designing my own, polished aluminum disk, gonna get stuff engraved on them, fill it in with some paint, they are drilled already, then I'm going to drill and tap my rims with 7/64s or 6/32 screw thread, and use sockethead cap screws with a bit of locktite...

I live one block North of Brooklyn College. You call this a wonderful neighborhood??????????
Brooklyn is full of thieves. It certainly isn't Vermont.
Last week, I discovered that someone had hacksawed his way through the Facia board on my garage, then had swept away the sawdust.
I believe that his aim was to gain access to the bottom door-track wheel, cut its axle, then push in the bottom of the door. No, I am not paranoid.
Sat out there with a loaded rifle for the whole week. Nothing yet.

The subway is on East 16th Street. I'm eight short blocks away.
Can you imagine how f..king close I am to Flatbush Avenue? Or to Foster Avenue?
Time to move.
