Any cops out there? Question about kid seat.

I wasn't sure where to start this thread but this seems as logical a place as any.

Anyways... my wife and I have been in a running "debate" about the safety of the 3.5 year old in the 3rd Gen. At issue is where does the booster seat belong? Front or back?

A few other pieces of information about this debate:
  • Granted, there are not very many safety features in my 3rd Gen. I think a Driver's side air bag is it. Not even ABS.
  • Convertible - I know... Inherent saftey issue.
  • All the documentation for the booster seats say use in the back seat. Too windy for the daughter with the top down.
  • What about cars with no back seats? Booster is allowed in the front in these cases, no?
Basically, I want to know if the configuration above is legal or not. In California I realize that anything is subject to being different than anywhere else...

Curious,

Not sure..laws being so different state to state, good question though that I`d like to hear the answer to, there`s a "ask a cop fourm" at 3rdgen.org http://www.3rdgen.org/bb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=22

I thought all states require them in the back.

I'm not sure about the law everywhere else, but in Oregon the child's seats HAVE to be in the back seat, and I'm pretty sure (not 100% on this) that up to a certain weight, they have to be turned around backwards so the child is facing the real seat.

I got off my lazy **** and did a

MA Child Safety Law

No mention of a front or rear seat requirement. It does recommend disabling passenger side airbag if applicable.

On the other hand there is the NHTSA study about Latest Child Auto Safety Guidelines

My daughter does look somewhat unprotected there.

She'll ride in the back or we'll take the Swedish car.

I was gonna say, part of the reason for the disabling of the passenger side air bag was to allow for a child seat in the front.

I think that the child can not be on front if you have a passenger side airbag, but this doesnt applie to cars without it and on two seaters like pickups an roadsters they have an airbag desaibleing switch. someone correct me if im wrong.

It can be in the front if it does not have a passenger side airbag. My daughter rides in front.most booster seats require a shoulder belt.

front is fine

The reason some people do not use the front seat is because of the airbag. Since there is no airbag then the front seat is fine.
